From the Head of Primary 28.10.2023
What a superb and exciting start to a new term it has been, as Primary has been enthralled by the theme of ‘Enterprise’. This is the return of a very popular event in the Primary School and so far the children have really shown their entrepreneurial spirit. We kicked off the week with an inspiring talk from a young man – only 13 years old – who is already the CEO of a company working here in Sabah, Koko Loko. It was clear to see from the children’s faces that he has inspired many of them to push themselves these 2 weeks to be the best they can be.

I have been personally able to see the superb work they have been doing as myself and Mr Gipson were pitched their ideas, ‘Dragons Den’ or ‘Shark Tank’ style on Thursday. All the children came with facts, figures, research and prototyped/ designs to convince us to invest in their companies. The ideas were brilliant and the children so brave under the challenging questions of the 2 panellists. I truly can’t wait to see these ideas come to life over the next week before the big sale sessions on Thursday at 8.30am-10.20am and 1pm-2pm. Please come along to support all the children in their endeavours and bring lots of cash! (see video of one of the brilliant pitches below!)
All profits from the Enterprise sales – taking place on Thursday – will be donated to charities that each class has researched and chosen. Many of these charities do good works right here in Sabah, as well as supporting other initiatives globally. The children are really taking ‘Global Citizenship’ to heart, over our Enterprise event.

You will have seen from the signs around school and the letter which went out earlier this week, that we are adjusting our approach to collecting children at 2pm in Primary. It has been a much smoother and safer process with parents/ carers coming to collect them from their labelled benches. Thank you for your support in this initiative.
We didn’t have our usual celebration assembly this week as we had an assembly on Tuesday to start off the new event. As such I can’t present your Stars of the Week. However, I personally believe that every child in Primary deserves this title this week, as they have all shown the qualities our school represents and made everyone proud.
Finally, to round off my newsletter this week, I would like to leave you with some words from our EYFS department as our youngest students went off on an adventure this week – their first trip at KIS!
Early Years had their first trip of the year on Thursday, with our visit to the Eco Farm on Signal Hill. This local business has an abundance of healthy vegetables, particularly kale and the Early Years children had the opportunity to tend to the soil and plant some of their own! We fed chickens and looked for eggs and were then treated to a delicious lunch. Some children were even brave enough to try the green kale juice! Experiences like this help our young learners to understand where food comes from and to try new things, as well as how to look after plants and work closely with nature. The children were wonderful ambassadors for KIS and listened carefully as Mr Lee from the Eco Farm told us all about the special powers their fresh water can give us. We are all so proud of how well the children behaved and cannot wait for our next trip!

Scary School Day!

Next week, along with all the other exciting events taking place in primary we have our ‘Scary School Day’ on Tuesday 31st October. Children are welcome to come into school dressed up in costumes as usual. I am sure that some of the teachers will come all dressed up too.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr Mark Beresford
