From the Head of PE & Sport 22.06.2024

  1. That is the number of editions I have written for the newsletter this year. 36 weekly reports sharing the wonderful achievements and happenings in PE and Sport this year. I can’t even begin to think of how many words they contained or the sheer number of extraordinary events that took part both in and out of school over the course of the year!

  1. That is the number of years I have had the pleasure of calling KIS and the beautiful Sabah my home. As many students will know, 7 is my lucky and favourite number and I feel incredibly fortunate and lucky to have had the opportunity to be here for these years.

What I cannot put a number on though are the countless amazing memories that I have accumulated during my time as Head of PE and Sport, or the many, many, MANY amazing people I have been gifted with meeting, working with and supported by during this incredible journey.

I would just like to take the opportunity to say a tremendous THANK YOU and express my sincerest gratitude to the KIS community for all you have done for me in helping to build something so very special in PE and Sport here. KIS is a truly remarkable place, and without doubt the best school I have ever had the opportunity to work at. The reason for that is simply down to the wonderful people that enter in and out of it each and every day.

You will not be forgotten and I am holding onto the words “Don’t be sad that it’s over, smile because it happened!”.

Till we meet again, all be it possibly from opposing FOBISIA coaching benches in the future!

Sabah Junior Tennis Tour

Last weekend, Benson (9S) and Isa (10K) took part in the Keningau leg of the Sabah Junior Tennis Tour. Both boys were successful in their Singles Tournament with Benson finishing in 3rd place for the U14 Boys and Isa losing the final of the U18’s Boys competition to finish 2nd.

Both boys also took part in the Under 18’s doubles component of the competition with Isa and his doubles partner winning the tournament.

Over the summer holidays, we will have at least 4 students taking part in the MSSD Tennis Tournament; Mira, Devon, Benson and Isa. We wish you all the best for a successful tournament and will be sure to hear all about it in August!

56th Sabah Invitational Age Group Swimming Championships

As mentioned last week, we had 12 students making a splash at the Sabah Age Group Swimming Championships at the recently renovated Likas Swimming Pool. Having spoken to many of the students at the event it would seem that it was a hugely successful experience for all. There were many personal records achieved and a number of students also succeeded in winning medals as part of their relay teams.

Congratulations again to all the students who took on the challenge and gave it their best efforts over the course of the competition!

Liga SupaRimau Season B – Season Wrap-up

Under 14’s Match report vs TABS – Captain Naollin

This was a spectacular game of football ending 6-1 to TABS. There were some mistakes made that resulted in goals but Andrew scored a penalty in the last minutes of the first half. We had some good attacks, but the TABS defense was too good. When we got a corner, we almost scored but it was cleared off the line. Sadly, it was not enough despite fighting so well. Special mention to Ryan for winning the man of the match award this week.

This weekend will see the Under 8’s and Under 10’s take the field in their last matches of the season. While the Under 12’s and Under 14’s will play one more round on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June.

It has been another truly impressive season for our Liga SupaRimau Vipers where they have showcased not only their unquestionable progress and development in skills and football game play but also their strength of character and determination to work hard towards achieving their goals. A memorable quote from Coach Clifford in the coaches whatsapp group recently was “our midfield strung four passes together in triangles which cut through their opposition and ended up with a saved goal. Thank goodness we didn’t score from it. No one wants to see a grown man cry!” This statement highlights just how far the player have come and how proud we all are in what they have achieved this season. Win, draw or loss, there is no question that when the Vipers take to the field you are going to be witness to something special!

Of course we would not have been privy to such fantastic results this season if it wasn’t for the incredible efforts of our dedicated coaching teams. As I have mentioned before, all coaches working with the Vipers are volunteers. They give up their evenings on a Thursday to help prepare the teams and then are stood, or rather pacing, the sidelines in the blazing sun shouting instructions and encouragement for all the players during the weekend fixtures. Liga SupaRimau simply would not have got off the ground, or been able to carry on and grow as it has without their support. So on behalf of myself and all the parents with children in Liga SupaRimau THANK YOU and job well done on another excellent season.

Under 8’s – Jimmy Lam and Em Rao

Under 10’s – Stuart Bromley and Phil Dobbs

Under 12’s – Andy Clifford and Roberto Leone

Under 14’s – Benoit Goosens, Anthony (Ben) Shim and Arius Yu

I would also like to highlight the generosity of so many of our parents who week in and week out provide the players with additional treats of isotonic drinks and ice creams, the perfect way to recover after a tough game of football. Not to mention often overseeing the care of the students during the games. Thank you to all the parents for your support in making sure your children are getting to training and games and making it possible for them to be a part of something so beneficial to their physical, mental and social well-being.

Finally, I would like to thank the players themselves. They are truly outstanding ambassadors for KIS and demonstrate on a weekly basis some of our core qualities of respect and challenging themselves to achieve their full potential. They fight hard showing resilience and genuine care and support for their team mates. And of course they have a lot of fun doing it all!

Well done Vipers and I look forward to following from a far how the next exciting chapters for Liga SupaRimau unfold.  Let’s go Vipers!!!

Get up and Move – Olympics Edition: The final results!

Our Get up and Move Challenge came to an end last weekend and I am pleased to report that KIS made it to Paris just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics! 17,000km’s + in total was logged!

Thank you to all those who took part in the challenge and congratulations to the winners in each respective category!

Whilst the Staff may not still beaten the students, I am very pleased to report that we did finally get one over the parents in taking 2nd place on the podium! Better luck next year mums and dads.

I hope that everyone in the community will take inspiration from the Olympics this summer and enjoy getting outside and active with family and friends! Keep getting up and moving KIS – even when on holidays!
