From the Head of PE & Sport 08.06.2024
Creating opportunities for students to explore being physically active and finding activities that they can get enjoyment from is a big part of the school experience. This week in Primary, as part of the Get up and Move unit, students in Years 1-5 had the opportunity to play with ‘wheels’ as students brought in their scooters, skateboards or skates in to roll around the court on.
It was fantastic and really brought to light a number of different elements for students to explore such as managing risk and safety, awareness of space, balance and coordination and even speed and agility as they raced down the race track or tried their hand at the agility obstacles.
We were super impressed with the riding and rolling skills of the students but I think the award for coolest skater dude goes to Mr Richie for landing a perfect ‘ollie’!
The lessons were a huge hit and it’s certainly something that we would love to explore in the future and see how it could be developed.
KIS SUP CUP
Something I am very much going to miss about living in Kota Kinabalu is going down to Tanjung Aru for a sunset paddle. I find it a brilliant way to relax and reset the mind and will always come off the water feeling better no matter the mood I start with. Aside from being an enjoyable physical activity for well-being, Stand up paddle boarding is also a fast growing competitive sport.
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of joining two students, Sebastien and Enzo both from Year 10 and also Ms Young as part of the KIS team in the inaugural KIS Cup, a stand up paddle board competition for schools launched by Nick Boura and Borneo Paddle Monkey’s and sponsored by KIS. As a developing sport around the world and with the perfect location to support its growth here in KK, I am sure that this event will take off in the coming years and grow in popularity.
Paddlers from both schools set up from the beach into the water and had to make their way around a ‘technical’ course that involved multiple tight turns around fixed buoys. Sebastien went out quickly into the lead and there he stayed for the duration of the race. Myseld and Ms Young tussled it out behind him but when Ms Young managed a sharp inside turn at one of the last buoys she got the advantage she needed to complete the 1km course in 2nd place with myself crossing in 3rd. Enzo performed well to cross in 6th place beating 3 of the JIS paddlers to secure a KIS victory.
Following on from the serious racing, students and staff also got to have a bit of fun working as a team with some more experienced paddlers on the ‘Giant SUPS’. These beasts of a board required 6-8 people to paddle in sync out to one of the buoys and then back again, challenging work but very entertaining!
On Sunday, Sebastien was presented with the shiny new KIS Cup and hopefully we will be able to keep it in our possession when the competition rolls around next year.
Well done to those who took part and be sure to keep an eye out for this event next year so you don’t miss out!
U18’s MSSD Basketball
It has been a brilliant week for our KIS Vipers Basketball teams competing at the U18 MSSD Basketball tournament held at SM Tshung Tsin, starting on Tuesday and concluding on Thursday.
Throughout the year, we have followed these teams in various competitions and seen the impressive progress that has been happening under the guidance of coach Andrew. Both teams performed extremely well and if you consider that it was an Under 18 tournament, and the average age of KIS teams was less than 14, it makes their results even more impressive and the prospect of what is to come in the next year or two very exciting.
Boys Tournament Report – Tony Jung
“This week, several students from both the boys’ and girls’ secondary school basketball teams participated in the MSSD basketball tournament located in the school of Tsung tsin. For those who are unfamiliar with MSSD, it stands for Masjid Sukan Sekolah Daerah, which is an inter-school district sports tournament where schools from a specific district compete against each other in various sports.
The boys’ total had 3 games and the first game was against Tsung Tsin. Unfortunately, we lost the game 57-18. In the second game, we had to win against Maktab, and we did, with a score of 59-32, which allowed us to advance to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, we faced Kian Kok in a close match, ultimately losing by just one point, with a final score of 58-59. . This marked the end of our journey in the MSSD basketball tournament.
In our team, our strength lay in everyone fulfilling their defensive roles effectively: some players focused on rebounding, others on boxing out opponents, and some on man-marking specific opponents. Additionally, because we are a close-knit team, our primary strength was our communication. If someone wasn’t in the right mindset, we encouraged each other to stay focused.
Our only motivation was to win and gain experience, to reach the finals, and to show everyone who we are. We aim to inspire our future stars to join and follow our journey, which we believe will eventually be successful.
Hopefully, in future tournaments, we will bring success to our school by bringing back the shiny trophy and medals.”
Congratulations to the following boys: Joe, Leroy, Tony, Sebastien, Prashaant, Mathew, Caleb, Jayden Thomas, Ian Zi, Henry Hutchinson and Aaron.
The girls achieved a first for KIS in taking out 3rd place after defeating Kian Kok 64-48 in their playoff match in a superb display of skill and toughness after a hard semi-final loss a couple of hours earlier in the day.
We will include a full match report from the girls next week.
Congratulations to the following girls: Dasha, Pui San, Sophie, Haylie, Ana, Melanie, Mischa, Olivia, Isabelle, Dashie, Dain
Liga SupaRimau Season B – Weekend wrap up
Missing a number of players due to the holidays meant a lot of teams were playing short last Saturday, but that didn’t stop some excellent results coming through.
Under 12’s Match Report – Coach Clifford
“This week, the Vipers U12 team celebrated their first victory of the season with a resounding 4-1 win! This triumph truly showcased the team’s perseverance and resilience.
The match featured an outstanding all-round performance, including fantastic goalkeeping, solid goal-line defence, cohesive midfield play, and cool finishing in front of goal. Every player contributed significantly to the success, making the decision for Player of the Match an easy one: the entire team!
Fantastic work, Vipers! Let’s keep this momentum going.”
Under 14’s Match Reports – Captain Naollin
Sunday 26th May vs KKFC
This was BY FAR the best game of the season for the Vipers. The game ended 1-1 which is our first draw and subsequently first point of the season! The first goal was a free kick by our opponents with a deflection into the goal. In the late minutes of the second half, Lucas had a chance at goal. The keeper saved it but luckily a couple of minutes later Andrew scored the equaliser after a strong battle in midfield. The game ended a few minutes later.
The whole team were awarded Players of the Match and special mentions to Andrew and Hei Ket who almost died on the pitch. This was a very well deserved draw and I think if we continue to play like this, we will improve & eventually win a match. Let’s all give a well deserved cheer for the Vipers squad.
Sunday 2nd June vs NBP
What a match against NBP! They drew first blood in the first half. Then we scored shortly after to bring the score level. The second half was a crazy game of football for the Vipers. We had some great chances with some great saves by their goal keeper. By some unlucky miracle, they got a corner at the last second of the game, which they scored from. We were flabbergasted, and there was no time for a counter attack since the referee blew the whistle right after they scored.
This was a good lesson for the entire Vipers team. Player of the match was Kevin for his improved play.
There are only a few more games to go this season but already we have seen some amazing performances from all teams.

Get up and Move – Olympics Edition Week 3 Update
House Challenge
Gaya have entered the race and amassed a lot of distance over the holiday break but Sulug have jumped in the lead overtaking Sapi. Keep loggin your minutes to earn distance towards Paris to see who will cross the finish line first!
In the Team challenge, the collective might of the students is seeing them start to pull away. The parents obviously didn’t take too kindly to being taunted and sitting in 3rd place before the holidays as they have now leapfrogged the Staff (largely due to the efforts of Chairman Benoit and Milena Salgado) to sit in second.
As a school community, we have just about reached Paris and so now in the final stretch it will be to see if any of the individual teams can make it on their own.
Keep logging your hours each time you do an Olympic Games Physical Activity by completing the Google Form here – Get Up and Move – Olympic Edition and attaching a photo as your evidence! The competition will close on Sunday 16th June.
FOBISIA News
The academic year has not even come to a close, but we have already begun making our plans for the first U15 FOBISIA Games that will take place November 26-30th once again at Patanna Sport Resort, Thailand.
If you have a child currently in Year 8 or Year 9 then you should have received a letter with details about how to register for your child by email during the week.
If you missed it you can view a copy of the letter by clicking the link here and then complete the Google Form here – U15 FOBISIA Games 2024.
In addition to completing the Google Form a RM2000 deposit is also required. If we can collect these by the stated date of Friday 21st June then we can confirm our participation early and obtain a 2.5% discount on the participation fee set by organisers Sport Management Worldwide.
