Earth Hour

‘Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment, engaging millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories. It has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people.’

If you would like to support Earth Hour, switch off your lights at home for an hour on Saturday, March 26, at 8:30 pm. People in other countries all over the world will be doing the same and will be switching their lights off at 8.30 pm local time. If 8.30 pm is past bedtime try switching your lights off just after it gets dark here in Sabah. Here are some ideas of what you could do as a family while the lights are out:

  • Have dinner in the dark
  • Read or play a board game by candlelight
  • Write a letter to your future eco warrior self
  • Dance in the dark to a silent disco

On Friday, we celebrated Earth Hour early by switching off all electricity from 9am-10am. The primary school were busy during this time sharing stories, going on scavenger hunts in PE, using scrap paper to make promises to the earth, creating posters on ‘Shaping our future’, building the highest freestanding towers from scrap paper whilst considering the pros and cons of building towers in towns and cities.

A great job guys.

This term the Y1 children have been learning about explorers and their adventures.

On Friday, they had their first school trip to Kiulu Valley, where they learnt many survival skills. The children had lots of fun learning how to make fires, make clean water through water filtration, how to build shelters and they went on a jungle trek which involved passing over suspension bridges.

The children have become efficient explorers!

Y3 have been very busy this term. They embarked on their second trip into the dark heart of Borneo. On the way, they discovered (but luckily didn’t have to use) many medicinal plants that cure a range of ailments. There was a long trek through the jungle and some crossing of rivers which took some courage. They all survived and finished the day with some team building games.

If your child loves Science or just wants to keep busy with a fun project for the 2 week break, please see the attached information about an exciting and practical Science Competition. Please send video entries to sfulat@kis.edu.my The deadline for the entries to Mrs Fulat is 29/4/22.
