Food waste campaign
Since June, the secondary Eco Warriors have been weighing the amount of food waste that students accumulate every lunchtime. This is anywhere between 4kg and 10kg per day during primary and secondary lunch.
The next step in our plan to reduce this is to ask for students feedback on what they think of the school lunches. Last week we sent out a questionnaire and got over 120 student responses. This week, Charmaine and Fion analysed all of the results and sent a detailed summary to Colour Meals who will take on board the suggestions. Please do let an Eco Warrior in your form know if you have any other ideas of how we could reduce the amount of food waste we send to landfill. One idea we have had is to compost food so please get in touch if you have any contacts who sell composters!
Other activities:
The Secondary Eco Warriors have also been collecting paper recyling from classrooms this week, and writing communications about the new Bring Your Own Container initiative starting Tuesday 24th October. We were so pleased to see many members of staff with their own containers, ready for our switch over after half term. Remember, you can borrow a reusable box on the day if you forget yours, but it will be a RM5 deposit. already using their own containers are. Again, there will be no changed to pre-ordered Colour Meals.
Dates for your diary:
Sunday 26th November (8:30-11am) – KIS Beach Clean at Likas Beach in collaboration with Trash Hero Kota Kinabalu. The secondary form group/primary class that gets the most attendees wins a prize! House points available for the house that collects the most trash when weighed.
Also happening in KK – Sunday 12th November there is a beach clean at Sulug Island. Volunteers are invited to paddleboard or sail to the island, take part in a beach clean and stay for a picnic lunch before bringing the trash back to KK. Contact Nick Boura at Paddlemonkeys (@borneopaddlemonkeys on Instagram and Facebook) to find out more and sign up.
Remember in classroom recyling boxes/bins, ONLY clean paper – no tissues or used food packets!

A reminder to bring your own container
Don’t forget that we are still encouraging people to bring their own containers to the school canteen to buy anything other than the pre-ordered meals. This is to reduce the amount of single use packaging that KIS sends to the quickly filling landfill sites in Malaysia. After half term there will be a small charge for takeaway packaging. Thank you to everyone who is in great habits with this already.
