Beach Clean-Up Saturday 21st September
Neither the haze nor the task ahead prevented the KIS community joining together for the first beach clean-up of 2019-2020 on the 21st September. Thirty-eight students with parents, teachers and Board members cleaned the beach at Tanjung Aru for four and a half hours. We collected 216 kilogrammes of plastic and other rubbish. Well done to all who attended; house points will be awarded. Team Sapi collected a total of 42 kg, Team Gaya bagged up 78kg while Team Sulug piled up a whopping 96kg. Julius from 2K wins an extra 5 house points as he found a flip flop (every beach clean-up finds one), Isabella from 7K gains 7 merits as she found a car bumper while Sebastian from 6S wins 10 merits for finding the back of a TV set!
Tiggi and Juah of 7S also receive merits as they collected a bag of rubbish while out sea-kayaking.
Special thank you to Mrs Chung and Mrs Pang for the delicious snacks.
Reef Cleanup
The KIS reef clean at Manukan Island was also extremely successful. In two dives, Julia of 7K and Keira of 6S led their team to a total haul of 90 kilogrammes!
Everyone can be an Eco-Warrior, you don’t have to come to beach clean-up. Say no to plastic straws, cups and takeaway containers. Bring your lunch in a reusable container and have a reusable water bottle. Clean up the benches after lunch by putting waste in the correct bin. Turn off the lights, air-conditioning and fans when you leave a room or classroom. Ask food shops to not wrap each time of fruit or vegetables in single-use plastic. Don’t keep mum, dad or your driver waiting with the car engine running, be on time. And if you visit the beach, dive, sail, sea-kayak and hike, pick up some rubbish.

Connecting with our neighbours – SM ST Francis Convent

On Thursday 12th September 2019, we had the privilege to connect with our friendly neighbours from SMK St. Francis Convent. We had a lovely tour around the school with lots of assistance from our enthusiastic students, Bella from Year 7 and Sophie & Sarah, both from Year 6, who were accompanied by Mr. Gross. It was great sharing ideas between both of the schools and discussing how we could improve the children’s learning environment.
It was announced during their visit, that KIS would be donating RM 1250 toward the establishment of their school field. This had been decided as part of our local community support during Ms. Sharon Rose’s role as the Community Liaison Officer. The funds were raised during the recent Summer Fair, held on the 28th June 2019, a week before we bid our goodbyes for the academic year of 2018/2019. It was a wonderful event enjoyed by our community. We can never forget the excitement of our lovely primary children with all their ideas through learning about Enterprise and coming up with a variety of products to sell. Of course, during that day children and parents, as well as our committed KIS staff, enjoyed themselves with tons of games, despite the hot weather.
At KIS, we are constantly focusing on developing successful global citizens. With continuous support for events like this, it is one of many opportunities that we can encourage our children to be a part of something beautiful by giving back to the community.

Community Liaison Officer
