From the Principal 28.05.2022
Saturday 28th May
Dear KIS Community,
As we head in to a well-deserved half term break, a little reflection of the past week’s highlights show a community coming back together. This past half term has very much seen a normality returning for the students and teachers in school. This past week has seen parents also become a part of this normality.
Starting last Saturday with the Eco Boot Sale, thank you to Ms Ann for arranging. Thank you to the students of our Primary and Secondary Councils, ably supported by Ms Hitchen and Mr & Mrs Beresford whose cakes sold out in quicker time than she had spent baking them. You can read all about this event (and others) in this newsletter.
On Wednesday, our PTASC organised our first whole school joint event for such a long time. The Flying Dusan came to school and performed to students, staff and parents. It was a hot but very enjoyable morning, the students particularly enjoyed seeing the staff dancing and attempting the magunatip (warrior) dance with the bamboo poles. Some of the students also had a go, and others were given the chance to hunt some wild balloons!
Thursday, followed with a successful PTA AGM, this was able to take place in person in school, again another first for the past of couple of years. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, it was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and enjoy some light refreshments. My thanks and gratitude to the outgoing steering committee and to Nicole Gervasi as Chair for the past year. Many of this year’s team will be staying on and we also have new members joining to give us a full committee for the new academic year. I look forward to working with the new PTASC committee as we bring back many favourite events to our calendar.
As we move forward we are getting close to our 50th Anniversary in 2023 and we are looking for a select committee of parents, staff and students to help guide us through this special year with ideas and energy to develop and organise events and activities to celebrate this wonderful milestone. If you would be interested to help, please drop me a line (principal@kis.edu.my).
As we know, cases of Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) are rising across Sabah. Predominantly this affects children under 10 and can be seen by fever, rashes on feet and / or hands as well as in the mouth. Practice regular handwashing. We do check temperature on entry to school and should we have a case in school we have protocols to follow based on Ministry advice. If you are unsure about your child’s health please seek medical advice and do not bring them to school until cleared to do so. Further advice can be found on the school website / KIS community / useful documents.
Finally, a reminder from the PTASC, Thursday 9th June is the Staff Appreciation Lunch, please see the PTA section of the newsletter to print out the bunting for staff comments and return to school after the holiday on Tuesday 7th.
I wish you a lovely holiday and Kaamatan, see you all on Tuesday 7th June.
