From the Head of Secondary 17.06.2023
Macbeth…..well, all of the massive anticipation of this major school event was well justified. On Wednesday and Thursday evening about 250 friends, parents and staff were kept enthralled by the action in the hall. This production had everything: atmosphere (the smoke machine was particularly appreciated by the younger members of the audience), super-tense moments which kept us holding our collective breath, comedy (almost slapstick at times) and brilliant performances from all (reflecting the hundreds of hours of rehearsal time and the natural talent of our students).

Macbeth was written in 1607 and first published in 1623. Four hundred years later I think William Shakespeare would have been as thrilled as we all were to see his work transformed through the creative genius of Mr Simon Bryant into a performance which held the audience as spellbound as it did its first Elizabethan audience all those centuries ago.
The whole enterprise would not have been possible without a whole group of back-stage volunteers and professional teams who worked together on stage management, props, programmes, posters, ticketing, videography, make-up. In addition, the Charity Committee, led by Pik Yen, made sure that we were provisioned with pizza and popcorn, and in doing so they raised over 800RM for charity.
This was the first major school drama production for a few years, and I am sure there will be more to come.
Congratulations to all involved, especially Mr Bryant!

As I write this the Silver DofE students and staff are undertaking their Adventurous Journey, which had been postponed due to hot weather restrictions. We will hear all about it next week, but I am sure they will have an enjoyable and successful time.
Last evening we had another hugely important event, the Year 13 Graduation. More about this in next week’s newsletter. Again, as I write this, we are getting ready for the rehearsal in the hall, transformed from the ‘blasted heath’ of Macbeth’s Scotland to a cool, calm, beautiful environment more suited to this sophisticated, formal event. Congratulations to all our graduates: Courtney, Richie, Ryan, Freya, Laverne, Janush, Mani, Estee, Hanson and Angelina.
This evening we have the annual Prom, starting at 6.30pm at Sutera Harbour. It promises to be the ‘most exciting event of the year’ (as stated on the posters) and also the most glamourous with its theme of ‘Hollywood Glamour’. I am sure that the students (and staff) will all have a wonderful time!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Kind regards
Mrs Margaret Renshaw
