From the Head of Secondary 16.09.2023
Meet the Prefect Teams!
We have assembled a wonderful selection of Year 11, 12, and 13 students to form our Prefect body this academic year. They have already worked hard to create their job descriptions and define their roles to meet the needs of the school. We have agreed on three teams, the Managing / Liaison Team, the Monitoring Team, and the Media and Marketing Team. Whilst they will work primarily within these groups, they will also be called upon for school events throughout the year- such as our upcoming Open Day on the 20th September, when they will be our tour guides for the prospective parents.
The Media and Marketing Team:

Head Prefect: Pui Mun
Team: Charmaine, Sarah, Ken Zi.
Job Description: Maintaining the school’s outward image, and promoting it online and in person, creating content for our media and digital platforms. We will represent KIS in media and events, supporting Ms Ambrose, and attend the Media and Marketing ECA (where possible) to hone our video editing skills. We are also hoping to develop a student broadcasting programme with audio/ visual updates on upcoming events to promote engagement – possibly this could be used to enhance the newsletter or student newspaper..
The Monitoring Team:

Head Prefect: Duncan
Team: Dongmin, Han Kyeol, Thomas, Isabella, Amanda, Yi Chen, Julia, Ruth, Joshua, Trinity, and Emilia.
Job Description: We will support staff with maintaining the school’s good Behaviour Policy during break and lunch time. Our role includes supervising lunch times to ensure lunch boxes are put away correctly and that people are eating only in the common areas that are supervised. We will supervise and encourage good behaviour while queuing in the canteen, and make sure the correct uniform is worn, including wearing hats when playing outside. We will also assist with Parent / Teacher conferences- collating attendance data for parent / teacher meetings. We would also like to develop a programme of academic ‘drop-in sessions’ and mentoring for students – helping with organisation skills and study tips. This could be subject specific and could involve teaching or helping others to understand difficult topics as needed during break or lunch time.
The Managing / Liaison Team:

Head Prefect: Calista
Prefects: Woon Tong, Juah, Hannah, Jack, Angelina, Pik Yen, Grace
Job Description: Our work will be to ensure all the committees and groups planning events in KIS are communicating and working smoothly together, keeping the separate teams and groups within the school connected and informed. We will liaise between the Student Council, Charity Committee, Eco Warriors, PTA, Wellness Warriors, Staff leadership, and the House leaders so that everyone is on the same page. This way we can ensure sustainability policies are upheld, and also make sure all our events are planned efficiently. We also want to help students transition smoothly from one Key Stage to the next, and assist new students with getting settled into new routines.
Many thanks to Mrs Colbeck, Prefect Mentor
We are also now able to announce who will be Secondary’s Student Council for 2023 – 2024

The main role of the student council is to facilitate student voice, and I am pleased to see that they have already come up with some ways to improve the school!
In other student leadership news, the Charity Committee are already planning their first event:

This is a very worthwhile cause and the Charity Committee will be delighted with whatever you can contribute to help the people affected by the recent earthquake in Morocco.
This week our Sixth Form students ran a session on Internet Safety with Key Stage 3:
‘Year 7-9 enjoyed an online safety presentation prepared by the sixth form students. Through a series of fun mini games and enlightening discussions, students have learnt about the importance of keeping personal information online private, and how our words and intentions can be easily misconstrued by the ever-present eyes of the internet.’ [Reine Y12]
IGCSE Year 11 Geography Students finally get out and about to complete long-awaited field work!
On Tuesday this week our group of 11 IGCSE Geography students were finally able to undertake their first Physical Fieldwork Day. This year group were in lockdown for their scheduled field trips of their Year 7, Year 8 and then in Year 9, the Forest Centre which they were to visit was closed.
We had hoped that in Year 10 they would get the opportunity to apply the methods and use the fieldwork equipment to investigate the physical world they had been studying: but in the week of the planned trip the Government announced a nationwide month-long ban on all outdoor activities for schools.

So finally this week, with no rain falling and a partly cloudy sky, the class were able to undertake their first Physical Geography fieldwork. We traveled to the Kiulu valley so that in groups of 4 they could investigate a river site on a small tributary in the morning, followed by a pilot study of coastal investigation methods and processes at Tanjung Aru 1st Beach. This was a highly successful day which allowed the students to gain first hand practical experience collecting primary data using a range of sampling strategies, methodologies and finally use all the equipment they had been theoretically learning about for years!
