From the Head of Primary 22.04.2023

I would like to wish everyone a Selamat Hari Raya this Saturday Morning.

It has been a wonderful four day week of learning in primary. The primary students have made a real effort to celebrate Earth Week by joining in the different daily activities. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I was lucky enough to work with Y2 who all made pledges to look after the earth in a variety of ways. Some promised to turn off the taps while brushing their teeth, some promised to recycle more and some even promised to stop using plastic altogether! I hope this week has given us all food for thought on the different things we can do to protect our planet and be better Global citizens.

With that in mind, you are all invited to nominate this year’s Primary Global Citizen!

The profile of the selected student must be aligned with the school’s vision of Global Citizenship:

A global citizen understands that we are all connected, upholds the values of equality and actively contributes to the development of a better world.

Global Citizens:

  • have an awareness of the wider world and a sense of their own role within it
  • respect and value diversity
  • are committed to social justice, equality and sustainability
  • participate in the community at a range of levels, from local to global
  • take responsibility for their actions

Global Citizenship involves:

  • Enquiring, discussing, thinking critically, reflecting and collaborating
  • Exploring the complexity of global issues and engaging with multiple perspectives
  • Applying learning to real-life issues and contexts
  • All ages and all areas of the curriculum
  • The whole school community

The student could be an eco-warrior/student council member/charity committee member/prefect etc. [but does not have to be]. They embody our mission statement. They are KIS community-minded but also think of others outside of the walls of the school. They are hands-on and can take the initiative and think for themselves. They treat others kindly, equally and respectfully and are not afraid to identify and challenge unfairness when they see it.

If you would like to nominate a student to be considered for this award, please email me: khitchen@kis.edu.my (Students and staff will receive a GForm next week.)

You must include the student’s name, year group and detailed information as to why you think they should receive this award. The deadline for nominations is Monday 8th May 2023.

Don’t forget to ‘Drop off and Drop in’ this coming Thursday. This session on Child Protection and Safeguarding is designed to provide valuable information on these issues and will be facilitated by our Safeguarding Team: Mrs Garrick, Mrs Renshaw, Miss Young, Ms Siti and myself. The session will include an open discussion about various issues which affect students across Primary and Secondary. Light refreshments will be provided.

Finally I would like to extend a very warm welcome to a new student and his family who joined us this week:

Lincoln in F1

Don’t forget Monday is a public holiday so I will see you all in school on Tuesday 25th May.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Take care.

Ms Karen Hitchen
