From the Head of Primary 19.09.2020

Thank you for coming into school this week to attend the Parent/Teacher Settling in Meetings. As I have mentioned many times before, strong home/school links are so important and really do play an important part in your child’s education. The meetings were very well attended and were a great opportunity for parents to meet their new class teachers on a 1:1 basis and find out how their children have settled into the new school year. The Parent/Teacher meetings will be followed by the End of Term 1 reports which will be issued in December. If you would like to meet with or speak to your class teacher before this please do get in touch via Dojo or email.

As the new Primary representative for the PTA I attended the second PTA meeting of the new school year this week. Although life is a little different at the moment and we have to follow safe operating procedures, the PTA still have lots of plans and ideas up their sleeves. Their first whole school event will be International Week which will be held in November with a number of opportunities for the school community to get involved in and celebrate culture diversity. One great idea for the week is to produce and sell an international cookbook which will feature art work from the children and delicious recipes from the school community. The PTA will advertise details soon but in the meantime if you have any recipes to share please do drop them off at the School Office or send them via email directly to the PTA. PTA@kis.edu.my

It’s not too late to apply to be an Eco Warrior. Have a look on the whole school Dojo page for information on how to apply. The closing date is Sunday so be quick!

You may remember that last year we launched a campaign to find a mascot for each house. Guest speakers from different conservation organisations were invited into school to talk to and educate the children about different wild animals of Borneo.  The children cast their votes and the votes were;

Sapi Sharks

Sulug Sunbears

Gaya Pangolins

Mrs Fletcher then later launched a competition to find a beautiful piece of art work to represent each animal and the winning designs were used on eco-friendly bags which are now available to purchase in the uniform shop.  Read more about this in the following article.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

SCHOOL HOUSE MASCOTS

During last school year, we launched the search for an animal mascot to be linked with each of our School Houses. Through an exciting Primary competition, linking art with conservation issues and research about animals native to Sabah, the school elected 3 special animals to become the House Mascots. As you know these 3 mascots became Gaya Pangolins, Sapi Sunbears and Sulug Sharks.

We worked closely with the support of Helle Enderby and Wild Kids Ink who brought animal conservation organisations into school to give thought provoking presentations to our Primary students about their newly elected mascots.

As a result of this inspiration, Primary children all set about the task of creating a drawing of the mascot for their house combined with an interesting fact they researched and learned about each animal. The winning designs were then beautifully printed as 3 unique Wild Bunch Bag designs.

In an exciting Primary Zoom assembly, the winners of our bag designs were each presented with their own copy of the House Mascot bag that they helped to create.

Amy and Sabrina, proudly showing the Gaya Pangolins and Sulug Sharks House Mascot
bags their artwork was used for. Marsya, who won the design competition for Sapi
Sunbears will be presented with her bag when she returns to school.

Congratulations go to:

If you would like to purchase your own House Mascot bag and show your school spirit, they are currently available from the School Uniform Shop. To continue our support of the local organisations who have inspired these House Mascots, each bag will soon be available from a selected organisation in Sabah, helping them to continue the amazing and valuable work they are doing for these animal species:

Sapi Sunbears Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
Sulug Sharks Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort
