From the Head of Primary 06.02.2021
Assembly as always was a highlight of my week and a welcome opportunity to connect with the children. We begin every week with a terrible rendition of the happy birthday song as over 100 staff and children attempt to sing in time and on key. Inevitably it’s a disaster every week but great fun and a chance for us to celebrate as a primary community. Along with birthday celebrations we also take time to celebrate house point certificate winners and of course the overall house point champions of the week. Each week I ask class teachers for their ‘shout outs’ which go to children who would normally receive a Star of the Week certificate if we were in school. This week all of year 2 received a special shout out from Mrs Mullen and Mr Ricardo and here’s why.
This week in Topic, Year 2 students have been learning all about food, where it comes from, how it has changed over the last 100 years, how it grows and why there are food shortages around the world. The children looked at Global Goal 2 ‘Zero Hunger’ and discussed why there is food poverty and what we can do to help put an end to world hunger. As well as discussing the importance of not wasting food, buying local products and limiting the amount of certain foods that we eat, they have also been working to donate rice to those people struggling with famine and food poverty. Using the website: www.freerice.com they have been working their brains to earn rice for those in need. Each question answered earns 5 grains of rice that will be donated on their behalf. Students earned rice answering questions on: multiplication tables, English vocabulary, flags, countries of the world and even on Spanish vocabulary. Over the course of the week, students and Y2 staff have used a bit of their topic and free time to earn a staggering 4240 points, which means they have donated 21,200 grains of rice.
