From the Head of PE & Sport 20.01.2024

Just two weeks into the term, and as I alluded to last week, our students are already throwing themselves into action on the sports field and court.

On Thursday night, I was thrilled to watch nearly 60 students from Years 2 to 9 taking part in the first Liga SupaRimau training session for the upcoming season. This January marks our ‘one-year anniversary’ of involvement in Liga SupaRimau. This time last year we had 34 players taking part in the Under 10 and Under 12 age groups. We later expanded to include a team in the Under 8’s, and this year we will enter a team in the Under 14’s for the first time ensuring that an important pathway is created for those students wishing to continue on their football development journey.

We would not be able to offer and run these engaging and exciting opportunities for students if it wasn’t for one of the strongest pillars of KIS – our incredible parent body. In running Liga SupaRimau we are incredibly fortunate to be aided by a wonderfully passionate and dedicated group of parent volunteer coaches. Together with parents who are committed to making these opportunities possible for their children by transporting them along to training and matches every week and cheering them on from the sidelines.

This week also sees KIS compete in the 19th Big Sky Tyre U14 Basketball Championship organised by Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association. We will have both a boys and girls team entered who will go up against other KK schools and basketball clubs. Given the ongoing positive development and progress of our basketball players under the guidance of Coach Andew, I have no doubt we will see some more impressive results and performances. Check out the schedule below if you would like to come and support the Vipers in their matches over the coming week.

19th Big Sky Tyre U14 Basketball Championships

As I write this the boys team will have their first match tonight (Friday) against KK High School A which while it will be a tough match to open the tournament with, will also be a great opportunity to witness how far the team have come since the last tournament.

All matches are taking place at Luyang Community Hall (click here for the google map link) and usually attract a fantastic crowd including lots of KIS parent and student supporters.

See below for the full schedule of matches.

Saturday 20th January @ 5:15pm KIS vs Tuaran (Boys)
Tuesday 23rd January @ 6:00pm KIS vs Lok Yuk X Creator Red (Boys)
Friday 26th January @ 6:00pm KIS vs KKHS Asia B (Girls)
Sunday 28th January @ 5:30pm KIS vs KKHS Asia A (Girls
Boys Finals to be carried on the Sunday 28th January

Good luck to the following players taking part in the tournament:

Girls – Ana, Haylie, Pui San, Sophie, Mischa, Olivia, Dashie, Melanie, Isabella, Dain

Dasha and Joe both from 10K will also be sitting on the bench and whilst unable to play due to the age group will be using their knowledge and experience in the role of assistant coaches.

Floorball Training

Floorball has been a highly popular and favourite activity for secondary students as part of the Invasion Games unit since it was introduced 7 years ago. In the past we have had students enjoy exploring their interest in the sport and develop their skills further by attending additional training sessions and entering competitions at both state and national levels.

Part of the KIS PE Department Mission states that “we aim to foster the development of our students and create a positive physical education culture that promotes curiosity in learning, progression and ultimately confidence to access a range of physical activities to be enjoyed within school and beyond the formal curriculum.”

With this in mind, together with Shawn and the Sabah Football Association, we are hoping to start building a pathway for students in floorball.

Starting Sunday 28th January, 3-5pm @BSA. KIS would like to invite any secondary students who would like to further improve their Floorball skills with Coach Shawn. It will cost RM10 per student, per session. We must have a minimum of 10 students otherwise the session will be cancelled. Sticks will be provided by the school but Coach Shawn encourages those who wish to take Floorball further to purchase their own stick so it is height appropriate.

Fill in the Google Form HERE to confirm your attendance for session 1.

If the club is successful then there will be opportunities to compete in matches and tournaments. It would be amazing to add another competitive sport to the Vipers list.
