From the Head of PE and Sport 30.09.2023

As I write this, I am fortunate to be in Singapore attending the FOBISIA Heads of PE Annual Conference with a central theme of “why we do, what we do”, where all matters of PE and Sport are being discussed including evaluating and reflecting on our current set up for the FOBISIA Games and other sports invitational events, as well as how we can continue to promote the sharing of best practice amongst colleagues across the FOBISIA family.

The trip also includes two days of jam-packed CPD on all manner of topics on Physical Education and Sport from creating an engaging and effective early years programme to how we best support our examination Physical Education students in achieving great results or supporting well-being and athlete development.

As a founding member of FOBISIA, KIS benefit tremendously from being part of an extensive network of now nearly 100 schools which presents outstanding opportunities for staff to come together with other professionals in our areas of specialty. These events are invaluable in allowing us to share in new and innovative ideas to help continue to grow and shape our learning environment, examining the WHAT, WHY and HOW of learning in PE to help create the best opportunities for our students.

KIS U15 Basketball Invitational

On Saturday our U15 FOBISIA Vipers had the opportunity to test their current match readiness in a series of friendly matches against both visiting schools St Francis and Maktab Nasional as well as a ‘KIS Select’ Team.

Sadly, wet weather forced the location of the tournament to move inside and the adoption of a 4 v 4 format, but that didn’t effect the quality of the basketball on display or the enthusiasm of both the players and spectators alike.

The girls opened the tournament against St Francis with a high scoring win of 50-36 where the team showcased some fantastic offensive team work led by Pui San (10K) who scored 24 points. The St Francis team had a strong last quarter spurred on by some very vocal cheering but it wasn’t enough and KIS Vipers took out the game. It was fantastic to see the growth and development of so many of the players from where they were 4 months ago during our last tournament and I am excited to see them compete next month at the FOBISIA Games.

The boys played a round robin competition comprising of 3 teams; KIS Vipers, Maktab Nasional and a put together ‘KIS Select’ team of students from Years 7-10.

The first match was KIS Select vs Maktab Nasional was a very close affair with Maktab Nasional sporting one very dominant player. The KIS Select team though led by Joe (10K) emerged victorious after some late tactical time-outs used by both teams made for an exciting finish with KIS Select winning 55-52.

The next match was a completely KIS affair, with Vipers taking on the Select team. With such a large squad of 16 in the U15 FOBISIA team, players rotated through the four quarters playing as teams of 4 so all players could get some match experience. In the end it was the KIS Select Team who won that match 47-36. With so much talent coming through in basketball at the moment we can certainly look forward to seeing players from both teams selected later in the year to represent at the U15 Spritzer Cup.

The final match of the day was between the Vipers and Maktab Nasional. Leroy (10K) led the charge for the Vipers against the more physically imposing Maktab team with some extremely exciting play show casing his growing talents. Again, another very hotly contested match which generated a lot of noise from those watching around the Hall. In the end it was KIS Vipers who took out the win 53-51!

It was certainly a well attended and enjoyable event and I was met with many requests from students at the end for more events.

A special mention to the wonderful parents who kindly donated and sold food and drinks on the day. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderfully supportive parent group at KIS!

Congratulations to all players who took part in the event.

KIS Vipers Selected to represent in the Malaysia Borneo Football Cup

Established in 2008 and known as a high quality International Youth Tournament, the event draws teams from across Asia and Australia. Three very lucky students – Caelan, Devon and Andrew were most excited when they were selected to assist one of the visiting Australian teams for the 3 day tournament which saw them play a number of matches, including their first match on Sabah FC’s home ground – Likas Stadium. I asked the boys to tell me a little bit about what their experience was like.

“Andrew, Caelan, and I were chosen to play for St. George City F.C. from Australia in the Borneo Football Cup 2023. This started on Sunday, on the 24th, and ended on Tuesday the 26th. I was very surprised to be selected for this in the first place and this has been a wonderful opportunity for me to join as I had the privilege to experience playing for an international club. The first game we played was against Putra Thunder FC, which was a very strong team and went on to win the whole tournament. One thing that surprised me in the cup was how we won against TABS 3-0 TWICE! Probably my favorite part of the whole thing was when my teammate, Lucas, scored an impressive overhead kick against ATENEO F.C. to wrap up a 3-0 victory against them. Overall, I have really enjoyed myself over the past three days and I learned a valuable lesson about teamwork. As they all say teamwork makes the dream work!” – Devon (7K)

“The Borneo cup was an exciting and enriching experience. I played with many players from many countries such as Malaysia, Phillipines and Australia. I played for an Australian team called St George City FC. The competition was met with passionate and competitive teams with the same goal of being crowned champions of the Borneo Cup. The matches were fast moving and physical as players were set to reach the standards required. The coaches were demanding and passionate reminding players to maintain certain values and skills required. Overall my team finished fifth out of eight teams making them a passionate and skilled competitor. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned a lot from the experience.” – Andrew (8S)

It is no easy feat, joining a completely new team on the day of the competition, but from what I am told the boys and their side grew from strength to strength throughout the competition and all three players remarked on what a wonderful and enjoyable opportunity it was for them to be a part of and learn from. Well done Caelan, Devon and Andrew!

Liga SupaRimau – Round 2 Wrap Up

Under 8’s Match Report –

The U8 Vipers team took the field for their first match of the Liga Suparimau season under challenging conditions from the rainy weather, against opponents, the TABS SAFA C team. We lost to a much better drilled team but did not give up and even scored 2 goals through Xavi who was clearly our Player of the Match.  Despite all that, the kids had an enjoyable outing learning to play as a team, motivating one another, running rings around opponents (mostly without the ball unfortunately) and surely will continue to improve and progress.  Thank you to all parents who came to support their kids and helping out.

Under 10’s Match Report

Saturday morning’s Under 10’s football match was a gripping contest that ended in a narrow 4-3 defeat for our team. Despite the outcome, the young athletes displayed remarkable sportsmanship and standout performances. Notably, Roy’s mature approach in goal stood out as he made incredible saves and kept the team’s composure intact, earning him the well-deserved title of Player of the Match.

The match was intense and showcased the team’s resilience and teamwork on a very wet Saturday morning. Despite the loss, our players maintained a strong team spirit, encouraging each other and displaying great camaraderie. The match was enjoyed by both sides, with a handshake between the teams after the game, emphasizing the importance of fair play. While victory eluded us this time, there was a lot to be proud of and we look forward to the next match.  Go Vipers!

Under 12’s Match Report

Under 12’s lost 0-4 but played really well in a new 3-4-1 formation. We were unlucky not to score after Caelan rocket volley near took their keepers head offf and Andrew’s top bins shot was tipped over by their keeper. We also had several goal mouth scrambles from Andrew’s corners that were dropped into the danger zone.

Congratulations to our Round 2 Player of the Match winners

Under 8’s – Xavier

Under 10’s – Roy

Under 12’s – Andrew
