Successful return to Floorball and Futsal @ Borneo Sports Arena

It has been wonderful to witness students in Years 9 and 10 back on the courts of Borneo Sports Arena (BSA) and enjoying two very popular and long missed sports from the PE curriculum over the past two years; floorball and futsal.

Having not participated in these two sports since December 2019, students were very excited and have thrown themselves into the learning activities with lots of enthusiasm. These sports are part of a larger unit looking at Invasion Games. Students will be exploring common concepts across different sports and games in regards to attacking and defensive strategies and the role of communication when working as part of a team. These units will also be a good opportunity for students to improve their general fitness with greater demands to move more whether it be playing floorball, futsal, tag rugby, touchball or basketball.

For the floorball lessons we have once again teamed up with members of the Sabah Floorball Association. Shaun Chung and Eeleen Tan have been assisting KIS to deliver quality floorball sessions for 4 years now and we have previously seen students join competitive floorball teams outside of school. A future goal we would love to see come to fruition is to have KIS take part in the Schools Floorball Championships which was previously an annual event.

For anyone interested in getting more involved in Floorball or trying it out for the first time, please reach out to Eeleen Tan (taneeleen@yahoo.com). Currently they have sessions running for adults which would be suitable for teenagers to join on Sundays, but would be very keen to start offering sessions for younger students if there was enough interest.
