KIS students flying high in MSSD – MSSS – MSSM competitions

Malaysia has finally seen a return to competitive school sport with competitions being held at district level for students to potentially progress onto state and national level competitions.

We have had a number of students take part in competitions across a variety of different sports over the past few months, achieving some excellent results. These competitions are a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their talents in sporting areas of interest often in activities that we can not always cater to within the school setting.

MSSD Table Tennis – Jin Wei (6S)

Jin Wei, last year as a student in Year 5 competed in the U12 years boys Table Tennis competition. He was successful in winning his first match, but sadly lost to a stronger opponent in Round 2 to be knocked out. The great news is that at only 10 years old he will be able to return again next year as one of the older competitors with another year of training and preparation under his belt. Well done, Jin Wei!

MSSD and MSSS Badminton – Kon Han (11S)

Our senior Sportswoman for 2022, Kon Han first won gold in both singles and doubles in the opening MSSD U18 Girls Badminton to qualify for MSSS which was held over the holidays. Like Jin Wei, Kon Han is at the lower range of the age group and so was up against some tough opposition. Despite this she managed to come 3rd in both singles and doubles which meant she only just missed selection to represent Sabah at the MSSM National Level. Despite the disappointment I am confident that I will be reporting on more of Kon Han’s competition successes throughout the year.

MSSS Golf – Dahyeon (5K) and Chaeeun (7K)

I introduced our two newest golfing champions last year following some of their successes at local tournaments in KK. Sadly, with the MSSD and MSSS Gold Tournaments falling during the summer holidays some of our other golfing students were unable to take part due to traveling. However, Dahyeon and Chaeeun after qualifying through the MSSD competition traveled to Tawau for the State competition MSSS and achieved fabulous results. Chaeeun was crowned champion in the U12 Girls category beating the best golfers across all of Sabah. Potentially, even more impressive was that her younger sister Dahyeon who is not even 10 years old and was also competing in the U12 Girls category, finished in 2nd place behind her sister. Ordinarily, finishing in 1st and 2nd place would qualify competitors to progressing onto MSSM for the best golfers across Malaysia, however, with the girls not being Malaysian they are not eligible for selection. Congratulations to both girls on your wonderful results.

MSSS Ten Pin Bowling – Natalie (8K)

I was fortunate to be able to be in attendance at the Globowl Bowling alley in Center Point at the start of the month to watch Natalie take part in the U12 Girls MSSS Ten Pin Bowling tournament. Natalie is extremely dedicated to her bowling and has also been taking part in additional tournaments over the summer where she recently returned from Sarawak for one. She started the tournament well and was enjoying a commanding lead. However, one of her KK teammates managed to pull out some high scores in the later rounds to put pressure on her. Thankfully, Natalies consistently strong scoring across the 6 games saw her finish in 1st place! This means that she will now go on to represent Sabah at the MSSM event next month. We wish her all the very best of luck as she takes on Malaysia’s best junior bowlers!
