Students creating headlines around Malaysia in their chosen sports

As mentioned last week it was a big week for a few KIS students taking part in major junior and senior sports events. You may have seen them in the news in both local and national papers alike, but in case you missed it read on below.

Kon Yi and Kon Han were both representing Sabah in the first Round of the 100Plus National Junior Division One Badminton Championship held in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend. While Kon Yi this time was unable to proceed to the finals of this tournament, Kon Han celebrated some great results taking away a silver medal in both the U14 Girls Singles and Doubles competition. Kon Han is is an incredibly dedicated athlete who participate in a very rigorous training program outside of school that involves focusing on not only her skill development, but also fitness and mental toughness. All essential when aspiring to reach the pinnacle of your sport. Best of luck to both in Round 2 that will take place in Kedah in July.

Another student who is learning a lot about what it takes to compete with the best is Timothy (10S). Timothy is often in the news for his golfing achievements and this weekend was no exception. He earned the opportunity to play the Bandar Malaysia Open; a major professional event on the Asian Golf tour that was held at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. Not only was Timothy one of only a handful of amateurs (10 from over 150 starters) in the event, but after playing an impressive opening 2 Rounds to finish at -2 he succeeded in becoming the 2nd youngest player to make the cut of the Malaysia Open that had been set at -1. Needless to say Timothy was thrilled with the result. Unfortunately, poor weather made for a lot of disruptions to play and difficult course conditions and the tournament was ultimately reduced to a 3 Round event. In the final Round, Timothy was sadly unable to carry on his tight performances of the first two days and finished with a score +8. Regardless, it was a phenomenal achievement for Timothy to go so far in an Open professional event and no doubt he will have walked away with a wealth of new knowledge about the pressures of top flight golf, even if as an amateur he was unable to walk away with a cheque!

Congratulations to all those who were participating in major events last weekend; the KIS community are all extremely proud of your achievements!

KS2/Secondary Swimming Gala – POSTPONED

As you no doubt would have read in earlier communications, the school has made the decision to postpone the planned KS2/Swimming Gala at this time. We will do our best to find an alternative date in Term 3 to still run the gala at a more suitable time.
