From the Head of PE and Sport 12.09.2020

After a long and frustrating hiatus, it has been wonderful to finally see students running around and engaging in physical activities during PE lessons this week once again. In order to ensure that the school’s Post MCO Safety Guidelines (SOP) is followed, students are currently only participating in activities that support physical distancing. Hygiene is also a major focus with students making sure they wash their hands or use sanitizer at the start and end of every lesson.

Students in Primary are currently following a unit on Fundamental Movement Skills. In this unit, students are working on developing and demonstrating a range of essential skills within the domains of Locomotor (movement), Manipulative (using equipment) and Stability (maintaining balance). Being able to master fundamental movement skills is essential to developing a child’s “physical literacy”. Just like teaching a child phonics to help them learn to read and write, teaching students fundamental movement skills equips them with the necessary tools to then take part in a wide range of movement activities and sports with greater confidence and success.

PE staff are currently conducting initial assessments on students to determine their proficiency in various skills according to age appropriate developments. These initial assessments are an excellent ‘assessment for learning’ opportunity and will allow PE staff to ascertain the current status of a child and identify those students that are in need of more support and plan activities and lessons to allow all children to engage in fun and challenge appropriate lessons. .

We will be sharing more information with parents about fundamental movement skills as well as how you can support your child at home in making sure they ‘fill their toolbox’ with everything they need to enjoy participating in PE and games.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, please make sure your child has their KIS hat with them on every PE day so that they can participate fully in all lessons and not miss any of the fun!

KS3 Girls Futsal

Whilst we may now be moving around in PE, I know many students are still missing participating in some of their favourite sports.

Starting next Tuesday, I will be running a Girls Futsal club for any girls interested in joining from KS3 at Borneo Sports Arena from 4:00-5:00pm.

Please note that this club is NOT connected with the school and does not form any part of a wider ECA program.

There will be 10 sessions where girls will be able to practice their skills and then take part in games to improve their ability to apply these in games as well as their games sense understanding for futsal.

Students will need to commit to the 10 sessions which are planned for the following dates.

Session Date
1 Tuesday 15.09.20
2 Tuesday 22.09.20
3 Tuesday 29.09.20
4 Tuesday 6.10.20
5 Tuesday 27.10.20
6 Tuesday 3.11.20
7 Tuesday 10.11.20
8 Tuesday 17.11.20
9 Tuesday 24.11.20
10 Tuesday 1.12.20

The cost for participating in the club will be RM100 which will be used to cover the cost of the court hire.

Further details about making payment will be provided once your child’s participation in the club has been confirmed.

Parents will be responsible for the transport to BSA of their own child and their collection at the end of the club. There will be no transport organised by the school.

Students will need to make sure they wear appropriate sports kit and I ask that students DO NOT wear their PE uniform for the session so as to make sure that members of the community do not associate the club with KIS and our current PE and ECA programme. Students will also need shin guards in order to participate in games for safety.

If your daughter would like to participate in the club then please complete the Google form by clicking here. Places in the club will be limited to 20 girls.

Please get in touch if you have any questions about the club or would like to know more.
