From the Head of PE and Sport 11.02.2023

It has been a tremendously exciting and action-packed week of sport with students across both Primary and Secondary taking part in locally organised competitive Football and Basketball Tournaments. I have loved being able to see our students challenge themselves and show so much enthusiasm and pure joy for the game whilst working together as part of a team to achieve their goals.

Liga SupaRimau Season Opener

Saturday 4th February saw the debut of KIS Vipers in the FAM (Football Association Malaysia) national talent identification league, Season A.

We have entered into the Sabah league with three teams, U10A, U10B & U12 with games played at the synthetic football training pitch in Likas. It was joyous to see so many students and parents at a structured competitive sports event and we hope this engagement grows going forward.

In the games themselves, our U10A’s played our U10B’s team in a wonderful atmosphere focussed on participation and enjoyment rather than results. Both teams played some very appealing football and there were many goals to see. The parent coaches nominated Isaac and Roy as Man of the Match players.

This weekend both U10 sides play local club sides in their second match whilst the U12’s play their first match against Malawa FT.

See below the match schedule for Saturday 11th February. If any KIS members would like to come and cheer on the teams, or see if this is something your child may be interested in taking part in in the future.

Team Opponent Kick-off Time
Under 10’s A SK Likas FC  8:00
Under 10’s B TABS SAFA Bandaraya A 9:10
Under 12’s Malawa FT 9:10

18TH BIG SKY TYRES CUP (14 & UNDER) YOUTH BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

I have had the pleasure of supporting teams competing in an Under 14 Basketball Tournament organised by Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association throughout the week with matches taking place in the evenings at Luyang Community Hall.

The standard of basketball was of a very high standard with schools such as KK High School and Tsung Tsin in attendance, as well as some of the big local Basketball clubs including Roosters and Riser.

KIS teams were comprised of students from Year 7-10, with one of the goals of the tournament to give some of our Under 13 FOBISIA players competition experience before they travel to Thailand in a week. This meant that the average age of the KIS teams was much younger than those that they were competing against with most of the other squads being composed of 14 and 15 year olds.

The atmosphere each evening was intense, with big, boisterous crowds in attendance supporting the players. It was wonderful to have so many parents in attendance, clapping and cheering on the Vipers. Many other students also came down to add their voices in support of their friends.

I have been in awe of the commitment from all the players and how they have conducted themselves on the court. All players have fought extremely hard and can hold their heads high with how they responded to being put under a lot of pressure from more experienced and talented teams. They may have sometimes got knocked down, but they always got up again and the Vipers team spirit was never in question!

During the opening ceremony it was remarked upon by one of the speakers how impressed they were with KIS. The teams’ tenacity and heart was clearly evident in their performances.

With basketball being such a hugely popular sport and enjoyed by so many students at KIS, being able to participate in events such as these are a wonderful opportunity for players to hone their skills and develop their understanding of the rules and tactics and ultimately improve their performance. We are certainly looking forward to being able to compete in future similar events.

During the course of this year, students taking Basketball as an ECA have had the benefit of being led by experienced basketball coach Andrew Bakmiwewa. Andrew has also generously given up his time to assist with coaching both the boys and girls teams throughout the tournament. A number of KIS students already attend coaching sessions from Andrew outside of school. If you think your child would enjoy the chance to take part in additional Basketball coaching sessions, then please contact Andrew on 010 566 8035 to ask about coaching opportunities.

Whilst the boys finished their last match on Wednesday night, the Girls team have one final match today (Saturday 11th) starting at 2:00pm. Please feel free to come down and cheer on the Vipers at the Luyang Community Hall later this afternoon.

Congratulations to all the players who took part.
