From the Eco Warriors 27.05.2023

During Earth Week, we had some workshops run by NGOs including Zero Waste Sabah and Ripple. The leaders of these organisations were very impressed to see the reusable lunch boxes that our canteen uses each day, and how much single use plastic this cuts down on. We are very proud to already be a single-use plastic free school! However, there is more to be done.

The Eco Warriors are encouraging everyone to bring their own reusable containers from next month, in a bid to reduce paper waste from the canteen to almost zero. This will not affect the Colour Meals pre-ordered lunch and snacks as they already come in reusable containers.

As of 1st June we’d like to see all staff and students Y6-13 bringing their own containers if they wish to buy anything in addition to pre-ordered meals. To begin with, the canteen will still stock a small number of paper boxes/bags/cups but we envisage that by the new school year, these will come at a small charge.

Thank you for your support in this important initiative to reduce the waste created at KIS. Minimising the amount of single use packaging we get through will reduce what we are sending to landfill. For those who would like more information on the situation of rapidly filling landfill sites in Malaysia, please see here this article: https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2022/07/814550/no-land-left-if-waste-not-reduced-warns-expert
