From the Head of Primary, 06.04.19

It has been a busy week in Primary yet again this week.

Key Stage 1 Production

The beginning of the week we heard Years 1 and 2 singing their hearts out in their production of Peter Pan. with each class taking a scene to act out, the audience was treated to multiple versions of Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, and Tinkerbell singing and dancing their way across the stage. There were many well known songs in the production which got the audience’s toes tapping. I would like to say a huge thank you to the ladies in the Story Sack team who have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to make many of the costumes. I would also like to thank once gain the Year 1 and 2 teaching teams who have been working with the children helping them learn their lines and songs.

So just as one production comes to a close, another one begins! Year six had a very nervous week after auditioning on Monday for their end of year production Olivia. On Wednesday afternoon, they were at last told their roles in the play. Mr Fletcher and Miss Westaway have had such a hard time casting the show, that they told me they have had to recast many times as the Year 6 students were just too good! I hope that Year 6 will remember their holiday homework now for learning their lines while they are away.

Foundation 2 Trip to Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Perdana Park

We have also had two trips out of school on Wednesday. Foundation 2 went to visit the Clownfish Discovery Centre at Shangri-la Tanjung Aru Resort (STAR) Marina followed by lunch and a play at Perdana Park as part of their topic about Animals. While at STAR, the children were given a guided tour of the Clownfish exhibit. They were also able to make their own Clownfish to take away and had a delicious snack at the hotel. They then went to Perdana Park to have lunch and explore the different wildlife they could see in the pond and trees before coming back to school very tired, but happy. On arrival back at school, when asked what their favourite part of the trip was, it was a tie between making paper clown fish and the touch pools.

Year 1 Trip to Tun Fuad Stephens Park, Bukit Padang

To conclude their work on exploration, Year One went to Tun Fuad Stephens Park at Bukit Padang (A.K.A The Jungle as I was told by many of the children). The children had the chance to feed the fish and turtles as well as listening to the sounds of the cicadas as they walked. While walking, the children were able to identify the bamboo, palm trees and fungus as well as seeing some of the local wildlife (squirrels and terrapins).

World War 2 Showcase by Year 6

Wednesday also saw Year 6 show casing their work on the World Wars to parents and each other. It was lovely to read the Evacuee Diaries and see the effort and hard work that the children have put in to making different artifacts. A real favourite for both parents and students alike were the kahoot quizzes. Parents were able to challenge their children to quizzes about WW2 via the kahoot app.

Easter Egg Hunt

Finally on Friday, the Student Council, under the guidance of Miss Westaway, organised an inter-house Easter Egg hunt. EYFS and KS1 had theirs separate to the rest of the school, early in the morning. They had to search in pairs or small groups to find as many eggs as possible that had been hidden. Then, just after break time, KS2 and Secondary came for their hunt. Nobody was too old to take part! It was lovely to see the students working together in mixed age teams to find as many eggs as possible withing the time allowed. Well done to Gaya House for being the overall winner!

I hope that you all have a safe and restful holiday over the next two weeks, before returning to school for term 3. A reminder of a couple of dates for your diary:

Primary Sports Day will be on Tuesday 23rd April. Please ensure your child goes directly to Penampang Stadium that day. Swimming will start on Tuesday 30th April for Year 1.

Whole School photographs will be on Wednesday 24th April. Please ensure that your child is in proper school uniform and not PE kit that day. Swimming will start on Wednesday 8th May for Y3K.

Topic talks and open afternoon for existing primary parents will be on Monday 29th April from 12.30pm in the MPR. Please keep this date free.
