Year 2 adopts a Sunbear!
Year 2’s ‘Wildlife Warrior’ unit has inspired many dinnertime discussions, debates in school and advocacy work to help protect Borneo’s environment and wildlife. Such enthusiasm was stimulated by the variety of guest speakers who visited school to talk about animal welfare. In particular, the ‘Kids to Conservationists’ presentation delivered by Milena Salgado Lynn and Benoit Goossens from the Danau Girang Field Centre had children discussing what they would like to do when they grow up.
On behalf of Year 2, and as a thank you to Dr Wong who came in to chat with us about his work at the sanctuary in Sepilok, I have adopted a sun bear named Romolina. Our little one-year-old cub had been taken from the forest and kept as a pet, confined to a tiny cage. The malnourished bear was then rescued from Kampung Romol, Sapulut, in the interior division of Sabah, and handed over to the Sabah Wildlife Department before being sent to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
