Review of Book Week 2019, 09.03.19
Another spectacular Book Week has been and gone, and with it a frantic and delightful array of reading activities, competitions, puzzles, quizzes, and celebrations. The theme of ‘Magic and Monsters’ inspired some superb costumes at the Character Parades, from both students and staff, and the creative talent on display for the Book Door competition, workshops, art classes, and the Cake Contest for Secondary was truly impressive.
The week opened with the much loved tradition of ‘Book Swap’, followed by the luxury of ‘The Big Read’- an hour with no distractions to get lost in to a new book! This is the fundamental core of Book Week: promoting, encouraging, and helping to foster a love of reading, and developing good reading habits for the future.
We welcomed back old favourites, such as Treasure Hunts, Quizzes, the Story Tent, ‘Drop it and Read’, and our programme of the older students taking time to read to the younger students and help to kindle a love of story-telling throughout the school. The Book Door competition saw some incredible artwork; such a lot of thought, teamwork, and effort from all involved! The cakes made for the Secondary Cake Contest were amazingly creative (and delicious!) and I’m sure many parents need to be thanked for their input.
We had some new activities too, including the fantastic ‘Hogwart’s Feast’ for Primary students, who I’m sure will agree that it was a great way to spend an afternoon. Year 6 and 7 enjoyed a thrilling game of Magic Masters for the week, casting spells at one another and ‘Mugglising’ their opponents! Many House Points and prizes were won, and much fun was had by all: I hope we are all looking forward to Book Week 2020!
