International Life by the PTASC

As we are still studying remotely and practising good social distancing skills the PTASC thought we would start celebrating the internationalism of KIS by sharing a game played in different countries each week.

This week we will showcase a game from Mexico 🇲🇽 .

The PTASC would love all parents to send through examples of games from their home country to pta@kis.edu.my. We will share a new game weekly in the newsletter.

In the 80s, playing “Elastic Band” during recess was a must for many Mexican kids. Although it was mostly played by girls, boys enjoyed it too. What you need is a braided elastic band, of about 4 m in length. It must be firmly secured at the edges to create a loop. The best is with a minimum of three players, but one could play “solo” by using two chairs to hold the band.

This game is similar to the Malaysian one we shared in the previous newsletter, in the sense that the height of the band from the ground is increased after each round: ankle level, knee, waist, armpits. In some variations, the height could go up to the neck and then with the band around the wrists but with the arms raised. To cross that height, you used the arms and not the legs.

The player has to do a series of jumps in the same order and not falling while doing so. The one who steps on the elastic band when it’s not supposed to, or falls during jumping, loses. The champ is the one who goes further in the game.
