International Life by the PTASC

As we are still studying remotely and practising good social distancing skills the PTASC thought we would start celebrating the internationalism of KIS by sharing a game played in different countries each week. This week we will showcase the game of Handball from Denmark 🇩🇰 .

Handball or in Danish ‘Håndbold’ was invented in Denmark in the late 1800’s by two school teachers and the first match was played in Denmark by two school teams in 1907.

It is a team sport in which two teams of 7 players each pass a ball, using their hands with the aim of getting the ball into the opposing team’s goal. A handball court is slightly larger than a basketball court and has a goal at each end of the court much like a futsal court.

Originally the game was played outdoors in the corner of a field or in a barn but these days is it mostly an indoor sport and is played in a sportshall.

It is a very popular sport in Denmark and the Danes are proud of their national womens and men’s handball teams, which have both won many medals and matches internationally.

Handball is also a very popular game amongst children and many kids join the local handball club or school handball team and play other towns and schools.
