From the Head of PE & Sport 25.05.2024
It’s been another incredibly busy, but extremely productive and positive week both in Physical Education lessons and sport for students and the entire KIS community in fact.
Students in Primary have continued their Get Up and Move Olympic focus with some highlights being students in years 5 and 6 trying out ‘wheelchair’ basketball by using scooters to demonstrate how sport can be tremendously fun and beneficial for all regardless of our individual abilities.
Year 2, got a ‘handle’ on some of the fundamentals of Handball in some small sided modified games. At the end of the lesson students were clearly able to articulate how they all used the elements of Head-Heart-Hands to be successful in their play, highlighting the awesome learning that has been ongoing throughout the year.

I popped into Year 10 Core PE on Monday to watch a very interesting lesson where Mr Denyer had students doing some ‘free running’ or parkour basics. This is a wonderful physical activity that allows students to use creativity and problem solving in order to move around obstacles. It is not only a great way to develop physical fitness and mobility but also trains students cognitive skills and also increases self-confidence as they find success in the way they move. Head-Heart-Hands in action! I could potentially see an improvement in students moving between lessons next year after further exploration of this sport!
KIS Tennis Fun Match
A number of KIS community members including students, parents and teachers were at Likas Tennis courts on Wednesday for what I am told by numerous sources was a FANTASTICALLY FUN day of tennis!
The event was spearheaded by Em Rao, our PTA Co-chair and involved players taking part in singles, doubles and junior doubles competitions. I am so grateful for the initiative
Singles
- Champion – Phil Dobbs
- Runner-up – Simon Bryant
- Semi-finalists – Ed Tiffany and Andy Clifford

Doubles
- Champions – Ruben and Frey Schrijver
- Runners up – Phil Dobbs and Ruby Denyer

All the finalists walked away with a lot more than pride and self-satisfaction from their performances but also medals and prizes as a result of generous event sponsorship from Datin and Datuk Arrifin. Thank you so much for your incredible support of this event!
A lot of hours were logged that day for the Get Up and Move Challenge, especially from the Parent team. Read on below to see the Week 1 Update!
MSSD NEWS –
The Malaysian school sport season is in full flurry and we have seen a few students already competing in their specialist sports over the past week with more to come in the next month.
Archery –
Over the weekend, Varshal (7S) and Yarina (Y10) were taking aim at MSSD success in Archery.
Yarina had her eye on the prize as she finished as 3rd runner up in the U18’s Girls. Sadly, as she is not Malaysian she will be unable to progress to the State Championships but still enjoyed the opportunity to take part. Varshal was disappointed with his final position but by all accounts learnt a lot from his participation and is still keen to carry on and work hard to improve next time. Great work, Varshal and Yarina!
Table Tennis –
On Monday and Tuesday, Jin Wei and Adithya both from 7S took part in the U12 Table Tennis championships. Both players won their first matches, but unfortunately Adithya was unable to win his next round match to progress further. Jin Wei carried on with 3 wins to progress to the quarter and then semi-finals where he was eventually defeated. He was able to bounce back though and win his playoff match to take out 3rd place overall and the opportunity to progress onto the next level of competition. Congratulations to both boys!

After the break, our U18’s boys and girls basketball teams will compete at Tshun Tsin and so we hope they will be able to perform well.
As always, if you would like to know more about any MSSD events then please do not hesitate to get in touch with either myself cwatt@kis.edu.my or Mr Richie our MSS Coordinator rcelestial@kis.edu.my
Liga SupaRimau Season B – Weekend wrap-up
Two teams had byes last weekend, with only the Under 10’s and Under 14’s taking to the field.
Under 14’s match report
“The third game of the season was against Pengalat FC, the top team of the league. The game ended 7-0 with it being 5-0 at half-time. The team made some mistakes, but overall, a very strong game. Special mentions to Aldrich and Kayne for winning Men of the Match. Some attacks from our side were very close to being a goal. This game was very difficult for the Vipers, so can we please have a very well-deserved cheer for the Vipers squad.” Captain Naollin
To add on to Naollin’s match report, I went down to cheer the team on on Sunday and was duly impressed with what I saw and the undeniable progress across the park from where the team started in January. They have adjusted to the complexities of playing on a full side pitch and 11-a-side and are becoming more confident in their efforts to play and move the ball around the pitch leading to more time in the attacking half and opportunities for attacks on goal.

Well done to all the players on your commitment and also to the passionate coaching staff and team managers!
Congratulations to the following players for receiving the Player of the Match award this week:
Under 10’s = Arlo
Under 14’s = Aldrich and Kayne
