Dear KIS Community,

Students across the school in certain year groups have been taking part in our annual assessments. These are not exams and cannot be revised for. They are essentially a snapshot of children’s abilities in four areas of reasoning: verbal, non-verbal, spatial, and quantitative. The purpose of using these assessments is to help understand your child’s capabilities and to give us a measure of future potential. This helps us to track your child’s progress against expected outcomes and to make sure we can intervene if a child is not making the expected progress and help them get back on track.

Last year we had a whole school focus on high quality learning and this year we continue the learning theme by developing our use of assessment for learning (AfL). Assessment for learning is a recognised approach to teaching and learning that creates feedback which is then used to improve students’ performance. Students become more involved in the learning process and from this gain confidence in what they are expected to learn and to what standard. More information will be made available as we progress through the year so that you can understand and be a part of your child’s learning journey.

Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who recently met again to continue the great work already being done as we collect evidence and review ourselves as a school. Some of our new families may not be aware, we are currently working toward a re-accreditation with the Council of International Schools (CIS). After a successful preparatory visit from CIS nearly a ago, we have been working hard on a self-study that looks at all aspects of us as an international school. We are working towards a visit from CIS in late March, where we will be judged against our own findings and the CIS standards in order to be re-accredited.

You can read about our CIS community survey results on our website in the Useful Documents section. Within this secure area you will be able to read many of the school’s policies that explain how and why we operate in the way we do, including matters on health and safety as well as child protection. You will also find our strategic planning, Vision 25.

Next week, please remember that Wednesday 16th is a public holiday as we celebrate Malaysia Day.

I wish you all a lovely weekend,

Ian Gross
