From the Head of Secondary 25.02.2023
Congratulations to the Vipers, who were extremely successful in the U13 FOBISIA Sports this week! Just as important as winning medals, in the words of Ms Watt ‘they have returned excited and proud of what they have achieved, both as individuals and as a team. Their conduct on and off and the sports field was superb! They were gracious in victory and defeat, and they never lost heart or their smiles! Well done Vipers, and many thanks to the staff who guided them, Ms Watt, Mr Celestial and Ms Young.
On Friday morning the Eco Warriors hosted a short assembly in the Hall where Ms McPherson launched a new initiative ‘The Grow Your Greens Challenge’. Not only will the students be growing tomato plants in a fun and competitive way, they will be recycling the school’s old toilet bowls [thoroughly cleaned by the Eco Warriors] as planters.
The Rules
- Collect your seeds, a recycled egg tray, soil, fertiliser and a ‘toilet planter’ from Ms McPherson on Monday morning (from 7:40am outside music block)
- You may use anything else you wish on your plants, e.g. a cane if they grow tall. All fertiliser should be organic.
- You must NOT touch or tamper with any other class’ plant. This will get your team disqualified!
We’ll be giving regular updates in how the plants are getting along!

On Monday Year 12 / 13 will be starting mock examinations, and also on Monday we have the Year 10 Parent / Teacher / Student conferences in the school hall. We are really looking forward to seeing all parents there participating in these important discussions as this group of students are halfway through their first year of IGCSE students. The rest of the term is going to go very quickly, and teachers will be starting to write the termly reports next week.

News from the Eco-Warriors!
The Eco Warriors are on a mission to celebrate Earth Day this year by having a selection of activities running throughout the week before – 17th to 21st April.
We will host a growing project and challenge that will be launched next week in which forms will compete to see who can grow the healthiest tomato plants by Thursday 20th April. On that day we will have a team of experts inspecting and judging the plants. There will also be a prize for the best decorated planter (toilet).
Next Monday, each form (including Y12s and Y13s) will be provided with a packet of tomato seeds, some compost, a cardboard seedling tray and a cup of fertilizer.
Once the seeds have begun to grow into healthy plants, the plants will be able to be transferred into one of the repurposed toilet bowls or cisterns that are currently being cleaned by the Secondary Eco Warriors. By this stage the plants do not need so much sun and may be able to be located closer to the classroom. It is unlikely that we will produce fruit by Earth Week, but this does not have to be the end of the project! It would be great to harvest our offerings when they are ready and decide a way to share them as a snack.
Reducing food waste at KIS is at the top of this year’s EW agenda and participating in activities like this will hopefully get the students thinking about the amount of effort it takes to grow something in order to eat it.
Beach Clean
REMEMBER, the Eco Warriors will also be holding a beach clean-up which is going to take place on Sunday 5th of March. This is going to be held at Langkah Syabas beach. Merits will be awarded to each person that participates and house points will be given to the winning house. The beach clean-up is not only a fun and filling way to spend your day but also an effective way to clear up the pollution. Be sure to head to Langkah Syabas on the 5th of March between 9am and 12 noon, and make a contribution to preserve the environment!
KS4 & 5 Recital
The KIS Secondary Music Department would like to invite you to attend our Key Stage 4 and 5 Music Recital. This concert will showcase the Cambridge performance portfolios from our IGCSE and A-Level music students. The recital is on Friday, March 10th at 7:00pm and will be held in The Kinabalu International School Hall. We would be honoured if you can share in this celebration with us.
