From the Head of Secondary 15.04.2023
I do hope that everybody had a wonderful term break. The first week back of Term 3 has been excellent, with a very high attendance rate, and lots going on. On Tuesday the Safeguarding Team meet as usual, and we discussed the upcoming Drop-Off and Drop-In Safeguarding and Child Protection Coffee Morning. More information will be sent out next week. On Wednesday morning we had all the Secondary students in the hall for a rapid 20 minute assembly, led by Ms McPherson, where she talked about Earth Week, starting with ‘Meat Free Monday’, and with a different theme each day. Well done to Ms McPherson and the Eco Warriors for developing, planning and organising this initiative!
The Holy month of Ramadan is a time to reflect upon and show compassion for the poor and less fortunate. Over the past few years, the KIS community has generously donated rice to the Masjid Nurul Hikmah Mosque, near to the school. This year the MFL department would like to continue this tradition and as such we will be collecting bags of rice, to be distributed for Hari Raya. Please consider donating rice for this worthy cause; donations can be left at the guard house until next Wednesday, the 19th April.
The IGCSE and A Level exams are rapidly approaching and in the Secondary Staff Meeting on Wednesday Mr Colbeck led us through the compulsory Cambridge Examinations invigilator training. The rules are very stringent and are designed to ensure absolute clarity and fairness to the students who are sitting the exams each day. Study Leave starts on the 26th April. During the following weeks the students and teachers will organise study / revision sessions in school to ensure that all are fully prepared to sit the papers. On Tuesday next week I will be talking to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students about study leave, and what it will entail.
Invitation for Nominations: Global Citizenship Award 2023

Every year at about this time I invite nominations from the community [staff, students and parents] for the Secondary Global Citizenship Award.
The profile of the selected student must be aligned with the school’s vision of Global Citizenship:
‘A global citizen understands that we are all connected, upholds the values of equality and actively contributes to the development of a better world.’
Global Citizens
- have an awareness of the wider world and a sense of their own role within it
- respect and value diversity
- are committed to social justice, equality and sustainability
- participate in the community at a range of levels, from local to global
- take responsibility for their actions
Global Citizenship involves:
- Enquiring, discussing, thinking critically, reflecting and collaborating
- Exploring the complexity of global issues and engaging with multiple perspectives
- Applying learning to real-life issues and contexts
- All ages and all areas of the curriculum
- The whole school community
The nominated student could be an eco-warrior/student council member/charity committee member/prefect etc. [but does not have to be]. This is a student who is organised and at the forefront when events are being lead and managed. They have the capacity to build teams and bring people together, and have demonstrated this ability. They are reliable. They treat others equally and respectfully and are not afraid to identify and challenge unfairness when they see it. They are KIS community-minded but also think of others outside of the walls of the school. They can delegate but will shoulder major burdens themselves. They are hands-on and can take the initiative and think for themselves.
Nominations are invited from students, staff and parents. You can nominate more than one student and he/she can be in any year group, 7 to 13. Nominations will be considered by the SLT and a decision made. The winner will receive a trophy and a certificate.
The deadline for nominations is Monday 8th May 2023. Students can nominate themselves, and parents can, of course, nominate their own child. If you would like to nominate a student, please email me [margaretrenshaw@kis.edu.my] with the name and form of the student, and clear and detailed reasons why you think the student deserves the Award.
See below the wonderful progress of the tomato plants that the students have been nurturing from seeds!
Have a wonderful weekend
Mrs Margaret Renshaw
Deputy Principal / Head of Secondary
