From the Head of Secondary 13.05.2023

Great joy and pride this week as KIS delivers our first home-grown tomato, from a plant grown entirely from seed, compost, light and water, and strenuously and carefully nurtured carefully by our student gardeners in its special receptacle, a refurbished toilet bowl. I think we should hereby name this pioneer ‘Tom 1’  and I am sure we will see many more Toms over the next 50 years at KIS.

In other news our Year 11, 12 and 13 students are continuing with their examinations and all is going very smoothly. Many thanks to all the staff who came into school last week during the holiday to invigilate and to ensure that all the rules and regulations were followed.

In the library Mrs Colbeck is very busy giving the space a major overhaul. There are many books in the library which we as a school no longer need, and so they will be packed up and hopefully sent to a new home. If anybody reading this knows of a school or institution who would welcome a book donation, please do let myself or Mrs Colbeck know and we will follow up on it. The most positive thing that can happen to them is that they become loved by readers around Kota Kinabalu.

Plans for the Prom are gathering apace with ticket and poster being designed by the student committee. I know that there are quite a few seriously excited students (have seen them huddled together in the library searching for costumes which suit the theme ‘Hollywood Glamour’). You can’t imagine anything much further away from that than our school production this year, Macbeth. Twenty eight students are putting all of their energy into hours and hours of rehearsals after school and at weekends, led by the indomitable Mr Bryant, supported by many members of staff.

Read on to find out about a new initiative ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ created by Ms Colley for Secondary (although this is something which goes across the whole school). This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show their caring side as global citizens.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Margaret Renshaw
