From the Head of Primary 15.06.19
Over the past few weeks Primary has been exceptionally busy.
Year Two have been treated to an informative talk by a local otter expert. It was world otter day last week and the plight of otters is not widely known. There are four different species of otter that can be found in Malaysia and one of these, the Hairy Nosed Otter, is listed by the WWF as endangered. Many countries have all otters protected under their endangered species act. The children were told about otter habitats and given an overview of how otters live in the wild.
We had our Egg-stravaganza! Science Day this year was all based around Eggs. Primary students were treated to an assembly by Ms Service where the age old question of ‘What came first, the chicken or the egg?’ was answered. We discovered that it was the egg as dinosaurs came from eggs and birds, including chickens, evolved from certain dinosaur species. We also discovered that Mr Burrows is the strongest teacher in KS2. He was the only person who was able to squeeze an egg and break it. While many of our students were a lot lighter than they expected as they were able to stand on a carton of eggs without breaking them!
Later in the day primary students were treated to the Secondary Robot Wars showdown and spent time cheering on their favourite egg protecting robot before testing their own egg contraptions to see who in each class had built the best parachute and cradle to protect their egg.
Students also finished all their Progress Tests at the end of last month. The results of these will be sent home to parents with end of year reports on Monday 1st July. If you already know that your child will not be in school during the last week of term and would like to receive their report via email, please send me an email (nickyrussell@kis.edu.my) before 28th June so that I can arrange this. Hard copies of reports will be available for collection from the school office once you return to KK.
This week has seen more activities happening in school. We had the PTA Kaamatan and Hari Raya Celebration on Tuesday as well as the Early Years and KS1 Swimming Gala yesterday not to mention the Year 4 residential trip to TAC in Kiulu and the Year 6 – Year 7 Transition days both of which happened from Wednesday – Friday this week.
Once the students are back to normal timetables next week I will find out how they went ready for next weeks newsletter.
Over the coming weeks we still have the KS2 and KS3 Swimming Gala, Beach Clean up, Summer Fair as well as KIS has Talent whole school events. Then just within primary we have the Year 6 production of Olivia, Primary Transition Afternoon, Arts Day, Year 2 sleepover at school, Reception and Foundation One trip, Primary Disco and of course end of year parties.
Whoever said that the run up to the end of a term was quiet?

Year 4 gets a visit from DHL
Year Four have been learning about persuasive language and advertising techniques and last week were very lucky to have a visit from Emmanuel’s Dad and other members of the DHL team. We enjoyed a really fun and interactive presentation and quizzes about DHL’s main selling points and how they get that across to their customers. It was great to see how some of the things we have been looking at in class are applied in a real-life context and we aim to apply what we have learnt when we persuade you all to come and purchase our wares at the upcoming KIS Summer Fair!
We would like to extend our thanks to Mr Loh and the DHL team for giving up their time and sharing a bit of industry expertise with us, as well as presenting us with gifts including a 50 year anniversary commemorative book for our school library.
