From the Head of Primary 11.03.2023

It has been a very busy week in Primary. The Primary students have been engaged in fantastic learning throughout their lessons and we have had several special events as well. Read on to find out more.

Year 1 held a Class Assembly and Showcase of their learning for their parents:

This term Year 1 have been learning all about the world. They have become experts in knowing the continents and oceans! They have been learning about the famous expedition of Robert Falcon Scott and his race to the South Pole against the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. The children were very intrigued by his story and enjoyed coming up with their own questions to research for their fact files. During their class assembly the children were able to demonstrate their knowledge and showcase all the work they have been doing in Topic. This consisted of a globe, world map and a fantasy map where they had all written a set of directions.

Year 1 all spoke very clearly and sang beautifully during their class assembly. They were amazing and I am very proud of all their hard work this term.

Well done!

Year 2 Nature Discovery at Rasa Ria

On Thursday, the Year 2 visited the Rasa Ria Discovery Centre and completed a nature walk through the trails. The staff were very knowledgeable about the various plants and animals living within their reserve. We were able to discover lots of types of snakes, insects and stingless bees. The children were able to consolidate their learning about habitats and plants from the term.

The children were fascinated by the nature they saw and walked between the tops of the trees on the reserve’s canopy walkway. To finish the day, the children were able to plant their own trees within the reserve. If you visit Rasa Ria, look out for the KIS tag on the trees by the discovery centre. Thank you to Rasa Ria for an excellent day and to the children that brought enthusiasm to all the day’s events.

Also on Thursday, I had the pleasure of showing a few of our Board members around the school.  When the Board members visit the school, it provides an opportunity for them to see firsthand how the school is operating and to assess the effectiveness of policies that they have put in place. This visit also allows the Board members to connect with the students, teachers, and staff members and get a sense of the school’s culture and community. By visiting the school, the Board can make informed decisions that align with the school’s mission and goals and ensure that the school is meeting the needs of its students and stakeholders.

Arts Day at KIS

As you know, Friday was Arts Day at KIS, and what a fabulous day it was! The children throughout Early Years and Primary enjoyed a day jam-packed full of exciting arts activities.

Our wonderful teachers did a fabulous job putting together an amazing array of arts activities for our students. We had marbling, sock puppets, dance, tie-dying T-shirts, stained-glass windows and photo editing to name a few! It has been a wonderful experience for all of our students, we hope they had as much fun as the teachers. We also had Tao Art Studio come in to instruct and support all of our EYFS and Primary children in making clay artwork, these will be assembled into collaborative pieces and revealed during the 50th Anniversary Gala for the Art Auction.

A big shout out to members of the Individual Needs department and to all the parents who came in to run arts workshops throughout the day (and the whole week in Early Years), I truly appreciate your support in making Arts Day such an outstanding success.

Due to Art’s Day there was no Celebration Assembly this week. All house points will roll over to next week when we will find out who has won the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards as well as the weekly housepoint winners. However the Trashless class winner was Y4S! Well done to them.

Next Tuesday is Maths Day! Every year around the 14th March we celebrate all that is marvellous about maths. After an assembly, led by our Primary Maths Lead, Megan Siddall, the students will take part in a rotation of maths activities that will put a wide range of maths skills to the test. This year we are inviting the children to come into school dressed up. They can come dressed up as their favourite maths topic, skill or famous mathematician! Take a look at Class Dojo for inspiration on costume ideas. Find out all about the fun they had in next week’s newsletter.

Next week, Year 5 are going on our first residential trip since before the pandemic! They will be visiting Zip Borneo Adventure centre in Kiulu. They will be spending 3 days and 2 nights there. I can not wait to hear all about this fabulous experience. As well, Y2 will be holding their Class Assembly and Showcase and Y3 will be hosting their Showcase for this term. Find out more on the year group pages of Class Dojo.

The week will finish with Family Fun Day which will be held on Saturday (18th March) between 10am and 1pm. Ms Mangkiu, Mrs Clifford and their team have been working hard to ensure this is a fabulous day for all, so please mark it in your diary.

Finally I would like to extend a very warm welcome to two new students and their family who joined us this week:

Sonny in Y2K and Daniel in Y4K

Have a wonderful weekend.

Take care.
