Read Write Inc Topic Talk
You will have hopefully seen by now on ClassDojo that you are invited to a Topic Talk on Thursday 7th March at 8am, in the MPR, to introduce you to Read Write Inc phonics. This is the phonic scheme that we use to teach your child the sounds and corresponding letters that they need to know for their reading, writing and spelling.
The meeting will introduce you to the principles of phonics and will give you some ideas of how you can support your child at home. It will also help you to use the same methods as we do, avoiding any confusion, and enable your child to make good progress.
This session should last for approximately 40 minutes. It is aimed more at parents of students in EYFS, KS1 and lower KS2, but if you would be interested in finding out more about phonics in general, please do come along.
The Sabah Foundation Song
Following on from my article last week, we will be having a professional film crew in school on Monday morning to record KS2 students singing Kami Anak-Anak Indah. If you would like your child to not participate in this filming, please send me an email by Sunday evening (nickyrussell@kis.edu.my).
Year 2 and STEAM
Year 2 have had a blast this week as they started a new ‘Moonwalkers’ topic. They had two fun days to get themselves in the mood for space exploration. Monday was an Art and Craft day where the students created themselves as astronauts, made planets and most excitingly worked collaboratively to build personal jet packs!
On Wednesday the children had a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math’s) day. With our resident chief engineer Mr CJ it was sure to be a success. When the children were working with Mr CJ, they were designing a prototype of an elevator to take them into space, what a great holiday that would be! The other activities the children had to complete were designing a rocket, astronaut team building activities and creating a space lunar lander. This, however, is just the beginning. With a taste for project design, being away from their desks and using their creative thinking, Year 2 shall continue with STEAM projects weekly for the next five weeks. I am looking forward to hearing more from them!
Year 6 in Penang
It was lovely going to the airport last night to welcome our Year 6 students and teaching team back from an extremely successful week in Penang. They had great fun visiting the war museum, crawling through the dark tunnels and climbing all the ladders. This has prepared them for a their studies this half term on World War Two in South East Asia. I am looking forward to hearing all the stories next week and being able to share some of them with you.
