PE and Sport Coffee Morning

On Wednesday morning, I had the absolute pleasure of being able to talk to some of our parents about something I am tremendously passionate about, PE and Sport at KIS. It was lovely to welcome nearly 20 parents into the hall as I presented on the importance of Physical Education in supporting children’s health and well-being and how our PE curriculum emphasises a holistic approach to student growth and development through the Head, Heart, Hands model.

Parents got to experience the concepts presented through some fun activities, and I have to say, I was very impressed with both the enthusiasm and learning shown. All participants were able to demonstrate elements of the head, heart and hands model whether it be through their skillful art of bouncing a ball, moving creatively like a sloth, devising tactics to work around the rules of the game, or lending a hand to help a friend so that everyone completed their Hula Hut challenge.

I hope that those present now have a more thorough understanding of what we are aspiring to create for students in our PE and Sports program and can share the word with others who were not able to make it.

Sport Education Awards Ceremony

Over the course of Term 2, students across Key Stage 3 have been developing the skills of indoor cricket. However rather than lessons being led by the teachers, students were given the opportunity to take charge of their own learning.

In Sport Education, students are organized into teams, which then compete against each other in various sports throughout a season. Students were divided into teams at the start of the term with every player taking on a specific role. These included a range of coaching positions to work on bowling, batting and fielding as well as a fitness coach and as all top sports teams need, a data analyst to track their progress and a media team to ensure that the team’s progress and results were well documented and publicised.

This approach allows for students to build confidence and independence in leading their peers and taking responsibility for their own success. It fostered a lot of the ‘soft skills’ that are so important for students to develop in order to become successful global citizens such as positive communication, planning & organisation, collaboration and leadership.

Lessons were structured with a training session and then a match each week. Teams were able to accumulate points in both their cricket league matches as well as through weekly tasks that were set which all went towards determining a Sport Education Champion Team.

Like any Sports Season, we finished with an Awards Ceremony to recognise those students and teams that had really excelled either in their individual roles or as a collective team unit. The whole event was overseen by student MC’s who did a marvellous job in presenting the awards and keeping the crowd entertained as did the fantastic highlights videos submitted by each team’s media representatives.

Overall, the feedback on the unit has been overwhelmingly positive and all PE staff commented on the wonderful progress that they observed throughout the term.

Well done to all students and especially those that walked away with special awards on Thursday!

KIS and Borneo Paddle Monkey’s present the “KIS Cup”

If you live in KK and haven’t had the chance to get out on the turquoise sea for a cruise on a kayak or stand up paddleboard (especially at sunset) yet, then you need to rectify that – IMMEDIATELY!

If you have been fortunate enough to then you may be interested in turning this recreational activity into a sporting activity.

In June, Borneo Paddle Monkey’s together with Kinabalu Yacht club will be hosting a two day Stand Up Paddle Board tournament with both technical and distance races being offered. The event is scheduled for Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.

In order to try and promote the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding in the junior ranks, KIS are hoping to launch the KIS Cup which will be an event open to school teams made up of both students and staff on the Saturday morning. I will be sending out more information at the start of next term but please keep this date and event in mind and reach out to me directly if your child might be interested in taking part.
