From the Head of PE & Sport 18.05.2024
This week across Primary, students have been exploring and experimenting with a range of different sports, the common theme linking them together – the Olympics. Looking ahead to the excitement of this major Global Event students across Primary are trying their hand (and feet) with different Olympic and also Paralympics sports.
Year 1 and Year 2 developed their understanding of how we can ensure that sport is inclusive and accessible to all by trying out seated volleyball as played in the Paralympics. In doing so they worked on their throwing and catching skills as well as working together as a team.

Year 3 were ‘aiming’ for success in some creative archery activities out on the field and then got to try beach volleyball, minus the hot and sticky sand.
In Year 4, they were ‘grappling’ with the concept of how to pin their partner to the floor in Judo with Mr Bromley

The gloves were definitely on for Year 5 as they learnt some basic punching and striking moves for boxing under Mr Richie’s expert guidance. Parent’s, please don’t worry, all students were warned not to try these newly honed skills out at home!
This unit will continue for another two weeks with every lesson focusing on a different sport from the Summer Olympics or Paralympic Games. We will be concluding the unit with what we hope will be a very fun lesson focusing on ‘Wheels’. This lesson will require students to bring either a scooter, skateboard or skates in for the lesson. More information will be sent out to parents next week and be posted on Dojo.
Get Up and Move Challenge – Olympics Edition!
Starting from this weekend and running through till Sunday 16th June, we will see if as a collective school community we can travel from Gaya Street in Kota Kinabalu, all the way to the Champs Elysees in Paris, France. A total distance of 11,185km!
How are we going to do this? By getting up and moving of course! Every minute of exercise performed by a member of the community will equal 1km of travel towards our target and final destination. The catch is though, your physical activity and movement needs to be linked to one of the 42 sports that will be on show this summer in Paris. Check out the list here –

There is flexibility in the way you participate in the sport. For example, if you go to the gym and participate in weight training, then you can log that under weight training. If you go out and ride your bike with your family on the weekend, then you can log those minutes. Break dance is making it’s Olympic Games debut but we will accept all forms of dance as counting towards the challenge.
HOW do you take part?
To accumulate your movement miles, simply complete the Google Form here and include a photo or video of you clearly participating in that sport.
HOW many Olympic sports can we tick off the list and put up on the board?
We will be creating a photo display on the notice board by the hall of people who have sent in their entries in order to see how many sports we can participate in.
HOUSE CHALLENGE!
I will be adding up the total Km’s accumulated by each house group in both Primary and Secondary to see who will be the Biggest Movers and also award Dojo’s and Merits to the individuals who contribute the most to their team totals.
WHO will claim the coveted Get up and move Cup?
In addition to the House competition for students, we will also see which school group can move the most and get their name engraved on the Cup as the 2024 Champions.
Will it be the parents again? Will the students rise to the challenge to defend their last title? Or will the Staff group get their first win and names on the trophy? We will have to wait and see!

Early Years Sports Morning
Ahoy me hearties,
On Monday, we welcomed three groups of pirates and their parents from F1 and F2 to participate in pirate-themed PE activities in the hall for their EYFS Sports Day. Everyone had a jolly good time moving treasure, walking the plank, attacking enemies, juggling cannonballs, and dancing the morning away as they moved from island to island celebrating their success.
The students came dressed in wonderful pirate outfits and participated brilliantly in the activities, showcasing their newly learned pirate skills to their parents. As a reward, each student took home a piece of treasure to keep forever.
Thank you, parents, for your continued support with the outfits, your attendance, and the enthusiasm you brought to the event. A big thank you also goes to Mr Richie, Ms Watt, and the entire EY team for ensuring everything ran smoothly.
Mr Denyer
Liga SupaRimau Season B – Weekend wrap up
Under 10’s Match Report –
Against the top team in Jubilo, the Under 8’s opted for a containment strategy measure this time round and succeeded quite well under the blazing hot sun. The players put in a lot of good effort and despite still lacking the basics they continue to show progress and the last quarter ended in a 1-1 draw. Sungwoo scoring a volley and for all his commitment taking charge all over the field earned himself Player of the Match. – Coach Jimmy
Under 10’s Match Report –
U10’s Vipers faced a difficult match last weekend against the much fancied TABS team. Our preparation was disrupted by planned changes in goal and absence from the training session on Thursday but the coaching team adapted with Xavier starting in goal, Benji covering the second period and John Michael closing the game in the third period.
The match itself was tough for the players with most of the field possession going to TABS. However, we were able to threaten their goal with several fast break opportunities but these fizzled out as often our last pass was not quite precise enough or the TABS defence scrambled back.

There was a notable performance from John Michael, making several incredibly brave stops diving at the feet of TABS attackers. However, Player of the Match went to Derek who is turning into our defensive stalwart and throw-in maestro. – Coach Bromley
Under 12’s Match Report –
In this week’s match, despite a 4-1 loss, the Vipers U12 team put up a strong fight, with the scoreline not fully reflecting the competitiveness of the game. The defense showed marked improvement, working cohesively as a unit and frequently catching the opposition offside.

Impressive midfield play contributed to a standout moment when the team executed a brilliant team goal, expertly finished off by Aiden.
Amidst the match, Bryan stood out as a shining example of Vipers spirit, continuously improving as the match progressed. His dedication and determination earned him the title of Player of the Match. Great job! – Coach Clifford
Under 14’s match report –
U14’s second game of the season was against Jubilo, one of the top teams of the league. The game ended 4-0 to Jubilo. This was a great result as we got beaten convincingly last time we met and so it is safe to say we have definitely improved a lot. Special mentions to Devon & Andrew who won the man of the match. We had many chances at goals, which again is a good boost for confidence. We spent much more time at their end of the pitch than last season. This in itself is a great improvement, so well done Vipers. It was a game filled with mistakes, but overall, a very good game. With it only being 2-0 at half time, we were positive that we could keep it at that, but they scored twice. This was still a great result for the team & I would like to thank every single team member which showed up to the game. I would also like to add a very good welcome to the newest member of the Vipers squad, Kayne. – Captain Naollin

Congratulations to the following players for receiving the Player of the Match award this week:
Under 8’s – Sungwoo
Under 10’s – Derek
Under 12’s – Bryan
Under 14’s – Devon and Andrew
