Fundamental Movements Skills – Building a solid foundation for success and enjoyment of physical activity

Over the course of the last 4 weeks, students in Primary have been following a unit focusing on developing their fundamental movement skills (FMS). Understanding how their bodies move and increasing their awareness and competence for executing a range of locomotor, stability and manipulative skills to develop their physical literacy.

“Physical literacy is a journey upon which children and youth, and everyone, develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to enable them to participate in a wide variety of activities.” (PHE Canada) This mirrors the KIS PE Mission statement where we strive “to ensure we equip our students with the fundamental skills, knowledge and attitudes to lead healthy active lifestyles, both within school and their post school lives.” Just like needing to recognise letters and sounds before being able to read and write, students must first be able to grasp the basics of how to move and perform key skills in order to progress and apply these in more complex games and activities to carry forward.

All students in Years 3-6 undertook the Canadian Agility and Movement Skill Assessment (CAMSA) to conclude the unit. This assessment, and the evidence and data gathered, is a valuable tool for PE staff to identify areas of strength and weakness, as well as overall patterns within students’ movements. This will be used to help guide future planning and put in place strategies to support students who are in need of additional support to ensure that they are developing to their full potential and have the confidence to engage in a range of physical activities.

Again, just as spending time reading with, or to, your child supports developing their literacy and can help create an invaluable love of reading and books, making time to play and create opportunities for your children to experiment with moving through play in all manner of ways will also not on strengthen their skills, but help to create a positive association with physical activity and assist them in making choices later in life to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

My challenge to the KIS community today is to think about what you can do to help foster a love of physical activity and movement at home? Get out this weekend and play a game as a family, whether it be hitting a badminton shuttle in the backyard, going to your local park and playing on the climbing equipment or playing a game of tag, riding scooters and bikes or throwing a frisbee down at the beach.

I’d love to see what you all do, send me a photo of what you enjoy doing as a family and I will share it next week. Have fun KIS!

Save the date – Secondary Sports Day is back!

After a long 3 year hiatus, we are incredibly excited to be in the ‘throws’ of organising Secondary Sports Day again. More details will be sent to parents in the coming weeks, but for now, please mark Wednesday 12th October in your diary and make sure you will be on hand to come down to Penampang Stadium to take in all the excitement, energy and House Spirit that will be sure to be on display on the day!

Come on Gaya, Sapi and Sulug – who has the strength, speed, stamina and SPIRIT to come out on top in 2022!

KIS students representing at MSSM

Over the past week, not one, but TWO students from Year 8 were involved in representing Sabah at the Malaysian National titles. Natalie (8K) was involved in the Ten Pin Bowling Championship and Mischa (8K) was playing basketball. I will be sharing more details of their results next week after a full investigation into their experience.

FOBISIA News

We have extended the deadline for the U13 FOBISIA Games registration and deposit to Wednesday 14th September. Interest in this trip has seen a very positive response over the past week, but we are still short of meeting the minimum numbers to ensure the trip can proceed which is 10 boys and 10 girls.

I am optimistic that we will find the final team members to complete the squad and have the KIS Vipers represent at the games in February. However, in the event that this does not happen, then parents will of course receive a full refund on the deposit paid.
