National Junior Circuit Badminton Tournament 2022

While many of us were enjoying a relaxing long weekend last week,  Kon Han (10S) was once again hard at work on the Badminton court representing Sabah at the National Junior Circuit Badminton Championship. Sabah was placed in Group C and were drawn against Sarawak, Kedah, Terengganu and Perlis.

In the U16 Girls Division, Kon Han competed in both the Singles and Doubles divisions and was successful in reaching the final in both competitions. A tremendous achievement following 5 days of intense matches. The depth of youth badminton talent in Sabah is very impressive as in both the U16 boys and girls competition the semi-finals were contested entirely by players from Sabah!

Coming into the final for the singles Kon Han was up against a fellow Sabahan, and in what Kon Han described as very testing conditions with temps climbing to 40’C inside the hall she fought hard, but ultimately went down in 3 sets to her opponent. Very pleased to have played so well and walk away with a silver medal.

With no time to recover or recuperate or even reset her head following her singles final, Kon Han had to get back on the court just 20 minutes later for the Doubles Final, which again, was an all Sabah affair and saw her face off AGAIN with her opponent from the previous final. Sadly, Kon Han and her partner were unable to go one better and had to settle for another silver medal – a truly fantastic feat after 5 days of exhausting matches!

The next round of the tournament will take place in June, while a third and a final culminating tournament will see all states and independent territories across Malaysia face off against each other in September. I have no doubt Kon Han will be feeling even more motivated to keep working hard and have her sights firmly set on seeing if she can go one better in the next tournament. Congratulations Kon Han from all of us!
