From the Head of PE and Sport 16.10.2021
Primary PE
Students in Primary have enjoyed a wonderful half-term exploring a range of different Olympic sports from Taekwondo and learning how to perform side and spin kicks, to using home made hockey sticks to reinforce their object manipulation skills with dribbling and passing.
Students have also developed their understanding of how components of fitness affect their performance when participating in these sports such as how ‘power’ can help you jump higher in volleyball or how ‘speed’ can give you an advantage in throwing quick punches when boxing or moving around the ring.
In Primary, we have been using the “Head, Heart, Hands” assessment model for the past few years as we want students to understand that their ‘thinking’ (Head) and ‘behaviours’ (Heart) are just as important as the physical ‘doing’ (Hands) to their ability to develop their skills and participate successfully in a range of games and sports. A key focus of this unit was not only on executing skills but also showing a desire to try and improve on their own personal best, just like real Olympic athletes!
After the half-term, students in Primary will be embarking on another new and exciting learning journey when the circus comes to KIS! Students in years 1-6 will be practicing a range of new and exciting skills from juggling with scarves or balls, stilt walking and other balancing activities, poi, hula hoop hi jinx and maybe even just some general clowning around! At the end of the unit we hope that every child will be able to create their very own circus skills routine to entertain and show off their new found skills!
I appreciate that PE often requires you to gather different items each week for lessons. We will continue to try our best to support parents by always publishing information ahead of the upcoming weeks PE lessons by posting details on Dojo of what students will need. I will also be sending out a list of suggested items that will be needed over the course of the unit to parents at the start of the term. One item that we have not been able to come up with an alternative ‘make at home’ version of is a hula hoop. See the pictures below.

It would be wonderful if the children were able to have one hula hoop for the unit which can also be used for all sorts of games and activities at home. You can purchase them from most toy stores or on Lazada or Shopee for no more than RM20. If you are unable to get one then please feel free to contact me for assistance.
We realise that learning at home presents any number of challenges, for both students and parents alike, even more so perhaps for PE where students are often restricted by a lack of safe space or limited resources to utilise. We continue to be so impressed by the highly positive and enthusiastic efforts of the children each and every week to engage with tasks and try their best to continue learning and developing their skills and knowledge within the Physical Education curriculum.
I’d like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe half-term holiday!
