U15 Basketball Tournament

If you are still at home enjoying your weekend coffee while enjoying the newsletter, get your travel mug out, put on your shoes and warm-up your vocal cords and get yourselves down to school to this morning to throw your support behind the Vipers in their basketball tournament this morning.

The girls U15 FOBISIA team will be in action against Jesselton International School and SMK St Francis between 8:30 and 10:30am.  While the boys squad will be doing their best to outwit and outplay  Jesselton International School and Maktab Nasional in their first competitive matches from 10:30-12:30pm.

Worried about getting dehydrated or losing your strength from all that cheering? Don’t worry because our amazing Charity Committee have coordinated the sale of a range of drinks and food items to keep everyone’s energy levels up! Our Charity Committee have a fantastic history of raising funds to support both local and international groups and this year’s amazing team of volunteers, led by Pik Yen, can’t wait to carry on that great work.

Make sure you bring your own containers with which to use for food and drinks, and help the KIS ecowarriors in their mission to reducing waste.

We are so thrilled to be taking this exciting next step in our ongoing efforts to increase  competitive sport opportunities for our students as we move forward from Covid-19. Watch this space for future events to get involved in.

The wait is almost over – Secondary Sports Day is here!

After a frantic half term where secondary students have been getting reacquainted with the multitude of skills needed to perform different athletic events, whilst also examining what it means to challenge themselves either in trying new events or pushing their limits in physical fitness workouts

Over the course of the week students have already completed some of the first Sports Day events during their PE lessons. We have witnessed some extremely competitive and tense high jump events where the atmosphere in the hall has been positively palpable. Students have been heard cheering for their friends and House mates successes and groaned in agony when the bar has fallen.

In the Javelin events we were fortunate to already see TWO records broken! Henry Hutchinson and Eshaana Kaur, both members of the Sulug Sharks, succeeded in breaking the records for  the Year 7 and Year 8 Boys and Girls Javelin events. Well done to both and I am sure they will not be the last records we see go at this years Sports Day. Breaking a school record brings with it the added benefit of winning 3 extra house points for the the team total, We will have to wait until Wednesday as we find out just how vital those bonus points may be to determining who  lifts the trophy!

Final Reminders:

  • The event is taking place at Penampang Athletics Stadium and students should be dropped off between 7:15-7:30am so as to be ready to start the days events at 7:40am. Remember, this is a compulsory school day and so ALL secondary students should be in attendance.
  • Please make sure your child has eaten a healthy breakfast before leaving the house and has with them high energy snacks as part of their packed lunch to ensure they have the fuel to get through the day.
  • Students are to be wearing their school PE kit that includes their coloured House T-shirt and navy shorts. Appropriate sports trainers should be worn and they will certainly need a hat to keep the sun off (should it be present that day!) and plenty of sunscreen to be reapplied throughout the day. They also should not leave home without their WATER BOTTLE!
  • The PTA have done an amazing job of securing the support of a multitude of different sponsors who have generously donated drinks to be sold on the day. Students will be able to get water as well as different isotonic drinks to help keep them hydrated and energised throughout the tough day of competitions. Parents, in addition to the cold drinks will also be able to maintain their state of alertness to follow the days proceedings by picking up a coffee or tea. Make sure you bring your own reusable mug or you will be charged an additional fee for a paper cup.
  • Parents, we know that the competitive fire is fierce in you too, so make sure you come dressed ready to run and take on the staff in some fun challenges!
  • FINALLY – The day will finish at 1:00pm! Students will not be allowed to leave before that even if they have finished their events, and they will not be returning to school. Please help us by making sure you are on time to collect your child at the end of the day

I am looking forward to seeing the fiery House competitive spirit across the school come to the fore in what will be a tremendously exciting day of sporting action. Led by our very capable House leadership team, I have no doubt that we will see students across the school getting behind their friends and fellow house mates and giving them the motivational boost they need to cross that finish line next week!

In an interview I was asked the impossible question of who I thought would win Sports Day and really I should have simply said – the House that works the best as a TEAM! So come on Secondary, whether you are Gaya, Sapi or Sulug get behind your team and let’s see if your voices can be heard by Primary back at school on Wednesday morning!

FOBISIA News

This week due to the Secondary Sports Day taking place on Wednesday there will be no U15 FOBISIA training on Tuesday after school,

Following the half-term break there will be a final Athletics training session on Saturday 28th October at Likas Athletics Stadium from 8-10am.

Parents of students in Year 5 and Year 6 should have received a letter regarding registering their child for the Primary FOBISIA Games taking place in Thailand in May, 2023. Whilst it may seem a long way away now, starting the planning now means we can start training preparations in Term 2 once a squad is confirmed. It also allows us to spread payments out over a longer time period to ease any financial pressure on parents. If you did not receive the letter then please click the link here: Primary FOBISIA Games Registration

Offsite Secondary PE lessons for Week 9

There will be no offsite lessons next week on account of Secondary Sports Day and International Day. Following the half-term break, all Secondary Offsite Lessons will be taking place at Borneo Sports Arena.
