Get up and MOVE – The Sequel!

Last year, we found a lot of enjoyment as a school community in finding ways to get outside and get active as a way to support our physical, mental and social well-being during periods of lockdown. The Get up and Move Challenge sparked a lot of ‘healthy competition’ between students, staff and parents alike, with the parent body taking out first prize for travelling almost the full circumference of Sabah.

As a school, KIS places a lot of importance on health and well-being and we are always looking to find ways to strengthen the message of adopting healthy lifestyle practices, supporting health initiatives or raising awareness or funds for groups such as the popularly supported ‘Movember’ and the Charity Committee in Secondary who are currently doing an amazing job in raising funds for Kinabalu Pink Ribbon.

So with all that in mind, we would like to finish off what has been another challenging school year and enjoy some of the recent SOP changes and easing of restrictions with a new physical activity challenge. So it’s time to “get up and MOVE” again KIS!

The NEW Challenge…

A pangolin, a sun bear and a shark lined up at Timpohon Gate at the foot of Mount Kinabalu and set off on a race to hike to the top of the highest peak in Malaysia. Who do you think will make it back to Low’s Peak at the whopping height of 4095m first?

Goal: To see if we can walk/run/cycle/move our way to the 4095m peak of Mount Kinabalu.

We will again divide up into our 3 House teams: Gaya Pangolins, Sapi Sunbears and the Sulug Sharks, who will also be challenged by a ‘KIS Parent Team’ and ‘KIS Staff Teamf’ to see which group can reach the peak first.

How can you accumulate distance for your Team?

Just like last time, there are many different ways to earn some altitude and make your way up the mountain – don’t worry, you don’t actually have to hike up it. BUT, you would certainly earn a lot of meters if you did! Basically, for any type of physical activity or movement you will be awarded meters towards your goal of 4095m at a rate of 1 meter for every minute of movement.

We want to make it as easy as possible for people to take part without having to rely on tracking apps. Therefore, you can accumulate distance for your team by simply recording the amount of time that you are active on a given activity. See the table below with a list of activities that you can explain how far you will travel for different activities.

How do you log your distance?

Any time you complete one of the physical activities listed you can then fill in the Google Form found here with your details and include a screenshot of your activity, or a video or photo of you taking part in the exercise.

You can complete the Google Form after every activity you take part in, as often as you move!

Tracking progress up the mountain

At the end of each week, we will tally the distances recorded by each team and update their progress up the mountain and publish this on Dojo for Primary and the Student House notices in Secondary.

Remember, as well as the students competing for their Houses, parents and staff will also be taking part and trying hard to get the better of their children and students!

We will have a leaderboard as well for the ‘most active movers’ in each Year Group, with dojos and house points up for grabs for those that move the furthest individually up the mountain.

Get your team off to a rapid start by logging some movement time over the weekend! Good luck to all teams and can’t wait to see how the competition unfolds! Will the parents be able to defend their title? Or will the student House groups rally to reach the top first? Whatever you do, don’t discount the Staff team, we may be small, but we are fiercely competitive and out for bragging rights!

Good luck to all and if you have any questions then please reach out to me at cwatt@kis.edu.my
