Secondary students and staff competing to be crowned “KIS’ Biggest Winner”!
The notion of focusing on one’s well being has become a highly valued concept in recent years and never has it had more attention and relevance since Covid-19 came into our lives. All of us have experienced changes in how we go about our day-to-day lives, and I’m sure we have all felt at times the impact of those changes on aspects of our well-being, whether that be social, mental or physical.
Secondary students in years 7-10 have started the year with a unit focusing on the importance of developing fitness and looking at the role that being physically active plays in maintaining their physical health and well-being. Our hope is that students can develop healthy attitudes and behaviours towards physical activity to carry with them throughout their school, and post school lives.
As part of their learning, students will be working on developing their understanding of how to plan and create effective workouts to carry out at home to improve their physical fitness. A number of willing, and some might say brave staff, across primary and secondary have volunteered to be the students personal fitness ‘proteges’. Each staff member has been assigned their very own team of (expert) personal trainers to help guide them through the perilous pitfalls of staying active and motivated whilst working from home.
In order to help us assess the effectiveness of the training programs, and demonstrate how regular physical activity can improve targeted components of fitness, students and staff this week have undertaken some simple fitness tests at home to measure their cardiovascular endurance and their muscular endurance before embarking on their fitness journey.
I would like to extend the opportunity to all members of the KIS community to join secondary students and staff in taking part in KIS’ Biggest Winner Competition. Check your starting point by completing these simple fitness tests at home and then each week we will share some of the ‘weekly workouts’ designed by the students for you to try at home and maybe you too can be one of “KIS’ Biggest Winners” by improving your fitness and also supporting your physical wellbeing!
