Mangrove Clean Up
Sunday 17th September saw a 30 strong team of the KIS community came together to learn more about the precious mangrove ecosystem we have right here in the heart of Kota Kinabalu. After an introductory video to understand more about the flora and fauna we might see at the wetlands, we slipped into our rubber boots and set off down the wooden boardwalk.

We stopped off at the small nursery where we filled seedling pots with mud and placed them alongside the growing saplings ready to be planted. Then it was time to open our trash sacks and cautiously step through the mud and around the tangled roots to retrieve discarded items of rubbish. Plastic bottles were everywhere and we got better at spotting them through the mud as the morning went on (though perhaps not better at accurately judging how deep some of the mud would be). Arlo’s cream trousers will never be the same again!
A reminder to bring your own container
Don’t forget that we are still encouraging people to bring their own containers to the school canteen to buy anything other than the pre-ordered meals. This is to reduce the amount of single use packaging that KIS sends to the quickly filling landfill sites in Malaysia. After half term there will be a small charge for takeaway packaging. Thank you to everyone who is in great habits with this already.
