From the Head of Secondary 13.04.2024

Whilst it’s been a short week it has not been without its special moments.

Tuesday: Volleyball Staff v Students!

Well done to Mr. Clifford for organizing the latest Staff v Students Volleyball Match this week. All of Secondary was out there to watch the match and savour all of the excitement that went with it. Before the event Mr Clifford was not at all sure of his team’s victory but as it turned out his worries were unfounded. The Staff Team threw themselves into it, and, in spite of the combined challenges of the heat and excellent play from the students, they emerged victorious.

Well done to all the players and to the Charity Committee who sold drinks and sweets which were well received by all.

We all look forward to the next round!

Term 3 is a short term but a busy one.

Our Year 11, 12 and 13 students will be commencing their exam period very soon. On the 24th of this month they will go on study leave. Over the years we have tried different ways of managing this and we have found that the most effective is to keep it simple. Letters have been sent home to parents and students explaining the system. Teachers will offer revision / study sessions to take place during scheduled lesson times, and students can take advantage of these if they wish; there is no compulsion to attend. Every week Mr Bromley, Head of Key Stage 4, and Mrs Colbeck, Head of Key Stage 5, will send the revision schedule home so that all parents and students are informed. Outside of these planned sessions, individual or small groups of students can request other times with their teachers to go through any specific topics that they would like more assistance with prior to their exam. In addition, a study room will be allocated so that, if they wish, students can do their revision at school rather than at home; some find it easier to do this as there may be too many distractions at home to allow them to fully concentrate.

We have every confidence that the school is providing an excellent way for our exam students to get all the help that they need prior to entering the exam hall in order to sit these important exams.

Wednesday 17th April: Year 10 Teacher / Parent / Student Conferences

On Wednesday next week we look forward to seeing parents of Year 10 students in the school hall to participate in discussions about their child’s progress during this first year of IGCSE studies. This is a compulsory event for the students and they will attend even if parents cannot make it, as we find that having those 5 to 10 minutes individually with their teachers is really valuable. At the end of this term all students will sit internal exams [from the 4th to the 11th June] and the PTSCs will be one way of supporting the students as they prepare for those.

Wednesday 17th April: Coffee Morning [Drama]

Following on the heels of the very successful PE Coffee Morning, we have the next in the series on Wednesday next week and Mr Bryant will present all things Drama. When I started at KIS 15 years ago Drama was not even a subject within the curriculum and over the years it has grown to be a subject that has been thoroughly enjoyed by hundreds of students. Not only that, it is a popular IGCSE and A Level subject choice. Much of its success is down to Mr Bryant, a passionate and knowledgeable teacher of 10 years standing at KIS. Come along on Wednesday at 8am to find out more. I can guarantee that you will find it to be highly enjoyable!

Have a wonderful weekend!
