From the Head of PE and Sport 16.09.2023

We have had a mixed bag of weather this week with quite a bit of rain at the start of the week coming in at different times of the day. No matter, the fantastic learning in PE was simply moved indoors. Some of our Year 7 and Year 9 students looked at developing their technique for standing triple jump and ways in which to maximise their explosive power to improve their distance.

When the rain hit at the start of Year 6’s lesson on Wednesday morning they were forced to quickly relocate to the EYFS outdoor learning area. Thankfully students were still able to complete their learning objective of developing their understanding of how to perform an overhead pass or set shot in volleyball. However, they did this through playing the adaptive paralympic sport of ‘seated volleyball’! It proved to be a great lesson with all students showing excellent resilience, adaptability and engagement in the lesson. Lots of fun was had in the mini seated volleyball games at the end of the lesson and I am sure it was also a beneficial learning experience to consider how sports are modified to ensure inclusion for all who wish to take part!

Liga SupaRimau Season C – Round 1 Wrap Up

It may have been a slightly cooler and dreary day last Saturday down at Likas for our first round of Season C Liga SupaRimau, but our Under 10 and Under 12 teams started their campaigns in red hot style!

As we’d hoped, having those initial first couple of training sessions prior to the season starting has clearly made a big difference already to the teams preparedness and their ability to take the field with confidence.

Under 12’s Match Report – Coach Ben

Last Saturday, the U12’s played their first game of Season C of La Liga SupaRimau. What an improvement from 6 months ago when they played their first competitive match ending in a heavy defeat. The first half ended with a well fought 0-0 scoreline with some strong defending  and crucial stops by our goalkeeper Justin who ended being Man of the Match. The game finished in defeat, 0-3, with some very unfortunate goals. Overall, the coaches are very proud of the team, Thursday’s training sessions are definitely helping, and the team is progressing tremendously.

Under 10’s Match Report

It was a truly exciting day for our Under 10’s last Saturday! They took to the field against TABS C and right from the first whistle showed excellent organisation in their positional play and were pushing forward applying pressure on the opposition’s defence. There was a roar of applause and celebration as the first Viper goal entered the net, struck well by Thomas and not long afterwards our Vipers were in unknown territory leading 3–0! TABS tried to come back and applied their own pressure on our defence and managed to get two goals back to make it 3-2. Some nervous pacing on the sidelines from the coaching team, but the players showed excellent determination and strength of character to finish the game strongly with two more goals from player of the match Thomas to seal the team’s FIRST Liga SupaRimau win!! A magical moment worth celebrating, especially for the core group of players who have been so committed to improving their football since they started back in January.

Congratulations to last week’s Players of the Match –

Under 10’s – Thomas Clifford

Under 12’s – Justin Kim

No matches this weekend on account of it being Malaysia Day. Games will resume on Saturday 23rd September where our Under 8’s will get to enjoy their first matches.

U13 FOBISIA Games (Feb. 19-23) – REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

We have received enough registrations from boys in Year 7 and 8 to meet the minimum numbers to send a team, but sadly are still missing a few girls to complete a full girls team.

I am extending the deadline for one more week to Friday 22nd September for both boys and girls, and will also be contacting parents of those girls already registered to outline alternative possibilities to ensure that those who want to attend FOBISIA can still have that experience should we not quite reach the numbers required for a girls team.

Attending a FOBISIA Games event is a fantastic opportunity for students to be a part of. Not only the benefits they gain from developing their skills and fitness for the range of sports competed in but also the opportunities to develop confidence in themselves as they take on new challenges and surprise themselves with what they are capable of. They become more independent and take responsibility for the choices and actions that they make both in preparation for the trip and whilst away. It is also a fantastic opportunity to make new friends both within school and with students from around Asia at the games. You can take a look at the U13’s games last year by watching the highlights video shared at the end of this article (scroll down)
