From the Head of PE and Sport 24.06.2023
It has been a MONSTER YEAR for PE and Sport with so many highlights, achievements and positive developments taking place. I am so incredibly proud of what our students have achieved both in the classroom and the progress they have made with their learning, and out of it, as far as the number of students choosing to take part in the ever increasing number of competitive sporting opportunities available.
Many of these would not have been possible without the dedication, passion and commitment of PE staff, additional teaching staff who have assisted with coaching responsibilities and ECA clubs, admin staff and of course the parents who act as ‘taxi drivers’, ‘cheerleaders’ and ‘financial backers’ to ensure their children have access to opportunities and memorable experiences as part of their KIS journey. So my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all those who have been part of PE and Sports journey this past year.
I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a massive thank you and wish Mr Watson and his family all the very best as he departs KIS for new adventures in Bangkok. Mr Watson has been a highly valued and respected member of the PE Department for the past 4 years at KIS. His dedication to providing the best learning experience for ALL students is nothing short of exceptional. I am sure that all our students from down in Early Years to our senior examination students have all benefited tremendously from his passion and expertise and will have many fond memories of his lessons to take away.
Stats are a big part of sport and so here are some to summarise PE and Sport at KIS for 2022-23.
- 3 FOBISIA Friendly Games with 67 students taking part to amass 3 trophies and over 100 medals!
- 3 Successful House Sports Days with Sulug winning Secondary and Sapi taking out the Primary day whilst all our EYFS Superheroes were winners!
- Over 50 students across Year 3-6 took part in KIS Football Cup in Term 1
- First two seasons of Liga SupaRimau Football completed with 6 teams across 3 age groups and nearly 50 players involved.
- Hosted other KK schools at the U15 KIS Cup Basketball tournament.
- Took part in both the U14 and U15 KKBA basketball tournaments with 4th and 3rd place positions taken out by the Girls team.
- We have students excelling in their chosen sports locally in KK, nationally and even internationally in golf, ten pin bowling, badminton, motor racing, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming and many more.
I am so excited to continue supporting our students to reach their full potential in PE and Sport moving into 2023-24!
Have an absolutely fabulous (and active!) summer break KIS and we will see you back on the sports field in August!
Liga SupaRimau Round 4 wrap-up
What a penultimate week for Liga SupaRimau Season B. This season has flown by and this morning all three teams will be playing in their final games of the season before we break for the summer holidays.
The Under 10’s and Under 12’s have a double header weekend and we will also be presenting some end of season awards, so if you aren’t busy come down to Likas Football pitch by the stadium and cheer on our Vipers and get a taste for all the fun that Liga SupaRimau Football offers!
Under 8’s claim KIS Vipers first win in the league!
“The under 8s have shown amazing progress in their first season playing football together. They have been playing against established clubs – who have regular coaching sessions – and have shown incredible resilience to keep working hard against superior opponents. This resilience and hard work has paid off: a 3-1 win against Miruru FC in their third game. After going 1-0 down, the u8s recovered to seal the victory with a hattrick from Xavier, and a last minute penalty save from Eden. All of the players should be very proud of what they have achieved, as should the parents!“ – Coach Dobbs
Under 10’s united front assault on Season B!
There has been great progress our U10’s school football team has made this season. They have shown remarkable improvement in playing as a team, coming incredibly close to a draw in their recent match. Thank you also for the unwavering support of parents and the efforts of the PTA in arranging refreshments. As the holiday season approaches, we encourage our able team to keep their passion for football alive by enjoying some casual kicks during their well-deserved break. With the strides they’ve made, we eagerly anticipate the upcoming season and the great achievements that lie ahead. Go Vipers!” – Coach Clifford
U12 KIS Vipers bite back!
“Earlier in the season, we had faced DF Sabah, a game in which we had dominated possession and field position but were undone by five well-taken, sucker punch, counter-attack goals; their only 5 shots all game.
We went into the game determined to not fall into this trap again and with a belief that if we played well a close game was in store.
We were not disappointed. In the first half, we once again dominated the ball, were resolute in defence but probably didn’t create too many chances. The best of which was an indirect free kick that went narrowly wide. We were very happy to go into the break on level terms 0-0, without parking any buses. The second half was a different story for both teams. We had a further two free kicks around their area with one being well saved by their goalkeeper. In another chance, a looping shot went narrowly over the bar. Then, dramatically, they worked the ball and shot right in front of the goal!
Ping!
Post!
The relief…
Almost immediately Caelan burst upfield shoulder to shoulder with their largest defender and after holding off some robust physical challenges his shot off his weaker foot beat the keeper but rolled agonisingly past the left post. The belief was up!
A few minutes later and it was Andrew to burst through their defence but this time without any covering defender. Mr Bromley went screaming up the sideline, David Moyes/Mourinho style convinced of the winning goal. Just as Andrew shot, the ball bobbled, resulting in the ball again beating the keeper but rolling past the right-hand post.
Finally, with a few minutes left a KIS free kick from Andrew was driven low and hard across the six-year box, somehow, evading all players when it just needed a slight touch to go in.
The final whistle blew and there was elation at the first point for KIS Vipers since joining the Supa Liga Rimau for any of our teams. The players ran their socks off and played for each other with determination and resistance. I hope that this result gives the players confidence that they can compete at this level and whets their appetite for future matches.” – Coach Bromley
Congratulations to the following players for earning the Player of the Match award last week.
Under 8’s = Xavier
Under 10’s = Roy
Under 12’s = Naollin
MSSD Table Tennis
On Monday and Tuesday this week, Adithya (6K) and Jin Wei (6S) competed at the MSSD Table Tennis Tournament hosted by SJK St James. Both boys were taking part in the U12 Boys Category and performed fantastically
In Round 1, which consisted of a round robin format Adityha won 2 out of his 3 matches, while Jin Wei won all three group games. These results meant both boys qualified for the knockout stage of the competition and moved into the Round of 32 later that day.
Adityha, who is still quite new to the sport of table tennis, unfortunately lost his match against a more experienced opponent but Jin Wei won his match to progress to the Round of 16 to be played the next day.
Back on Tuesday morning, Jin Wei’s winning streak continued to see him beat his opponent and move onto the quarter finals of the competition. Sadly, Jin Wei was unable to produce his best play in that match and ended up losing, disappointing to be sure but always a valuable learning experience taking part in a big competition.
Needing to bounce back from that set back and disappointment, Jin Wei still had more games to play, and more to play for, as he moved into a final round to determine who would finish in 5th place and secure the last qualifying place for the MSSS event. Jin Wei kept his focus and was successful in winning the playoff round to finish in 5th and move on to represent KK at the MSSS state competition next month.
Well done to both boys who at just 11 years of age are still young for the category and so will be able to come back next year in the same age group having learnt a lot from this years experience.
Many thanks to Ms Wong and Ms Goldie who attended the event to support the boys.
