MSSM Wrap up
The season for Malaysian school sport is coming to a close with many of the National Level competitions and tournaments taking place this month. As mentioned last week KIS had two students competing in two very different sports.
MSSM Basketball – Mischa (8K)
Having only just started at KIS in Year 8 in August, Mischa was one of two students from her old school Lok Yuk Likas who were selected to represent Sabah at the Under 12 Years Girls Basketball Championships held in Kuala Lumpur from the 3rd to 7th September. After what Mischa described as a hard week of training to prepare for the event Sabah finished in 7th place.
I asked Mischa what her favourite part of being involved in the event was and she said “the experience of not having parent supervision and going to another state with my teammates.” No doubt the fun and challenge of playing basketball with her teammates was also high up there!
For a lot of students, having that opportunity to be a little more independent can be a wonderful learning experience and something that being involved in FOBISIA Sports trips can also provide along with building that camaraderie of being with friends who have shared interests.
MSSM Ten Pin Bowling – Natalie (8K)
Also over in West Malaysia representing Sabah, Natalie was in Ipoh competing at the Under 12 Girls Ten Pin Bowling Championships from the 4th-7th September. Like Mischa, taking part in such a high level competition meant a lot of extra training beforehand in order to prepare for the event.
Sabah had 12 bowlers in attendance and enjoyed a lot of success at the event which Natalie contributed to. In the main singles event, Natalie finished in second place to win Silver which is a remarkable achievement to be proud of. However, going one better, she and her partner from Sabah managed to combine in the doubles to win Gold! If those two medals weren’t enough, Natalie managed to pick another Silver medal in the “Step-Ladder” competition.
When asked what her favourite part of taking part in the competition was, Natalie said the feeling of bowling a high score. It is always a great feeling of self-satisfaction when you see the results of all your efforts reflected in your performance.
I’m sure all of KIS will join me in passing on their congratulations to both Mischa and Natalie on their recent performances, great job!
FOBISIA News
U15 FOBISIA Basketball Invitational – Saturday 8th October
This week we sent out invitations to a few other International and local schools in KK inviting them to attend the 2022 KIS Basketball Invitational Tournament on Saturday 8th October.
In the past we have enjoyed running this friendly event hosting schools such as Jesselton International School, Maktab, The Indonesian International School and our neighbours St. Francis.
These mini tournaments are extremely valuable events in helping FOBISIA squads prepare for their competitions; not only in practising and refining their skills in competitive situations, but also allows them to experience the mental demands of sport that are equally important in ensuring students are prepared for the rigours of competitive sport.
More information on this event to follow and will be shared with parents once confirmed.
U13 FOBISIA Games: 19th-23rd February, 2023 – FINAL CALL!
Despite many very keen Year 7 and Year 8 students signed up already, we are sadly still a few students short in completing our Under 13 FOBISIA Games Squad.
As I am still awaiting the deadline for entries from the organisers I will be keeping the registration open for another week.
We will not be able to run the trip without the minimum number of 10 boys and 10 girls. If we are able to reach 10 boys or 10 girls then we can look at the possibility of only sending a girls team or boys team to the event. However this is not a guarantee
If any parents are interested in sending their child but have concerns about the costs of the trip I would encourage you to contact me to discuss possible options in supporting your child being able to attend.
