From the Head of Secondary 17.09.2022

The Student Council have now been confirmed for 2022:

The Council have now met a couple of times and are enthusiastically putting together their plans for 2022 – 2023. I am confident that this wonderful group of students are going to do a tremendous job moving forward, and have a very positive effect on the School.

The Charity Committee has also elected its postholders and they are already planning the way forward and finalising excellent ideas for the year ahead. Again, we can have every confidence that they will more than fulfill expectation to make the Charity Committee an integral part of student leadership and action within school.

Congratulations to all!

Have a lovely long weekend

Kind regards,

Mrs Margaret Renshaw

Deputy Principal/ Head of Secondary

Bowling for Team Building!

On Tuesday afternoon our Year 12 / 13 students went bowling!

A rather unusual trip for them, organised by Mr Clifford with the goal of developing team spirit and cohesion within our most senior group of students, see here some photos which give us all an impression of what a lovely time they had!

Kudat Turtle Conservation Society

Last Friday afternoon I took part in a meeting and workshop organised by the chairperson of Kudat Turtle Conservation Society KTCS in Kudat at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau.

It was attended by 38 people from WWF Malaysia, Sabah fisheries department, local NGOs , tour operators, local community and members of the KTCS and managed by Sofia who is the chairperson of KTCS.

We had quite a long agenda and only 2 hours to work through it and of course we had to stop for delicious makan makan treats kindly prepared by chef Jai!

We started by talking about the International Coastal Cleanup ICC next Saturday 17th September.

It was agreed that we would cleanup x3 beaches located at Kelambu, Bavang Jamal and Tanjung Simpang Mengayau from 7am until 11am.

There will be wardens identifying and weighing all the rubbish.

There will also be x3 boats with volunteer divers to clean up the reefs and in particular the ghost nets.

Kudat council will be supplying a skip for all the rubbish.

We then moved on to discuss the systematic waste management plan and had a workshop where we wrote down the 4 main topic areas and then all attendees completed post it notes with all their answers and suggestions relating to:

  1. What are the types of rubbish we have
  2. What are our current disposal methods
  3. What are the challenges we face in disposing of the rubbish
  4. Our suggestions for improvement

We did this for household waste (domestic) and then for non domestic such as the washing machine we found on the beach a few months ago!

The three lady interns who are helping with this project are from the university of Sarawak UNIMAS and will put all our ideas into a report to present to WWF, Sabah Parks, Kudat town board, Sabah Tourism Board, District office and other related agencies in Kudat.

Let’s hope that this will get Kudat it’s much needed rubbish collection and raise the awareness of recycling and plastic waste!

Prefect Team 2022-23

On Monday 12th September, we had our first gathering of all the new Prefects for this academic year. All had undergone an interview process, and then were sorted into one of four teams that KIS hopes to focus our efforts on this year: The Environment and Sustainability Team, working closely with the Eco Warriors, Student Council, and the Charity Committee. Headed by Grace Lee, and ably supported by Amber Bromley, Lou-Anne Guatier, and Estee Voon.

We also have the Wellbeing Team, who will be working with Ms Siti Nurafif bt Naim (our school counsellor) to promote good mental health habits amongst the student body. This team is led by Duncan Cheng, and supported by Hannah Hammer, Debbie Wong, and Trinity Hwong.

Our Academic Mentoring team will be led by Head Prefect Cyan Liu, and supported by David Mills, Emilia Yam, Lavern Ku, and Hanson Wong. They will be working closely with Key Stage Co-ordinators to help support the students with time management, communication, and study skills from their own wealth of experiences, as well as with training from Ms Siti.

Finally, we have the Media and Marketing team, who will be supporting Ms Lisa Ambrose to produce content for our social media platforms and digital presence. The team is led by Jessmine Tay, and comprises Courtney Thornton, Charmaine Chung, Ruth Tsen, and Pui Mun Kan.

I look forward to a very productive year ahead with these Prefects! I hope we will continue to have as much good cheer and fine cakes as we did in this inaugural meeting.

Mrs Colbeck

Head of Key Stage 5
