From the Head of Primary 18.05.2024

I hope this newsletter finds you well and in great spirits. As we progress through this exciting term, I am delighted to share some of the incredible work our students have been undertaking in their classes. Their dedication and enthusiasm are truly inspiring.

A special mention goes to our hardworking Student Council, which I had the privilege of leading this week. Their commitment to representing their peers and contributing to school life is commendable. They continue to be a vital part of our school community, ensuring that student voices are heard and making positive changes within the school.

School Trips and Residentials

Currently, our Year 6 students are away on their much-anticipated residential trip. This experience is more than just a break from the classroom; it is a vital component of their education. Residential trips offer our students the opportunity to explore the world beyond the school gates, engage with new environments, and develop critical life skills.

Leaving the familiar setting of the classroom allows students to take risks, build resilience, and enhance their social skills. The activities planned for our Year 6s include outdoor adventures, team-building exercises, and cultural experiences, all designed to foster independence and a sense of responsibility. These trips are instrumental in helping students to grow in confidence and learn the importance of working collaboratively.

The memories and lessons gained from these experiences are invaluable. They contribute to a well-rounded education and help students to see the relevance of their classroom learning in the wider world. We are proud of our Year 6s and look forward to hearing all about their adventures upon their return.

Showcases

Our Year 3 students have kicked off the showcasing season with a brilliant presentation on Dinosaurs and the ancient world. These showcases are more than just an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge; they are a celebration of their hard work and an integral part of their learning journey.

Preparing for a showcase requires students to consolidate their learning, think critically about how to present their ideas, and practice their public speaking skills. It is a comprehensive exercise that promotes deep understanding and retention of the subject matter. Moreover, presenting their work to parents and peers boosts their confidence and gives them a sense of accomplishment.

Showcases also play a significant role in student engagement and wellbeing. They provide a platform for students to take pride in their achievements and receive positive feedback from their community. This process not only reinforces their learning but also strengthens the connection between home and school, fostering a supportive environment for students to thrive.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 3 students for their exceptional effort and creativity in their recent showcase. Their enthusiasm for learning and ability to share their knowledge is truly commendable.

Celebration Assembly

This week, we returned to our usual celebration assembly after the fantastic festivities of the Fobisia Games last week. It was heartening to recognize the achievements of our students once again. Congratulations to those who received house point certificates, the trashless class award, and the star of the week. Your hard work and dedication continue to shine.

Staff Appreciation Day

On behalf of all the staff at Kinabalu International School, I extend a heartfelt thank you to the parents for their wonderful gestures on Staff Appreciation Day last Thursday. Having our duties covered and enjoying a lovely lunch was greatly appreciated. Your support means the world to us and makes our school community even stronger.

In the spirit of appreciation, I would like to make special mention of Ms Ambrose, who tirelessly releases these newsletters each week to the community and I am sure correcting many of my errors along the way. Without her efforts, you would not receive these wonderful updates each week and I am sure you are all as grateful for her efforts as I am.

Thank you for your continued involvement and support. Together, we are creating an enriching and nurturing environment for our students to grow and succeed.

Warm regards,

Mark Beresford
