Girls Football Friendly vs SMK St Frances Convent

A selection of girls from Year 7 – Year 11 who have taken part in the Football ECA clubs throughout the year had an excellent opportunity on Tuesday afternoon to play a friendly fixture against our neighbouring school, SMK St Frances Convent.

The match was held on the synthetic football pitch at Likas, the same pitch used by local professional football club, Sabah FC for their training which was a real treat for the players.

For many of the girls who had only joined the club in Term 2, and not attended any FOBISIA competitions, this was to be their first football match and so understandably there were some nerves leading up to the match.

After a warm-up and brief team talk to outline the key ‘plan of attack’, the referee blew his whistle and the match began. The game started with both sides evenly matched with most of the possession in the middle of the pitch and neither team breaking through for any chances on goals.

The girls on the bench had to be asked a couple of times to ‘turn down’ their volume as their excitement on the sideline and eagerness to cheer on the team was deafening for the other supporters and Miss Watt trying to pass on messages from the sideline.

After some solid defense and good passing through the midfield it was the KIS Vipers who scored first with Renee putting the ball past the goalkeeper from close range. The team was ecstatic as were the many parents and other KIS students who had come down to watch the match.

As a coach, I always say the next 2 minutes after a goal are critical and sure enough sadly a lapse in concentration following our goal allowed St Frances to retaliate and score a goal of their own to make it 1-1. Towards the end of the 2nd half, legs were getting tired and St Frances capitalised scoring another goal to go into the half time break 2-1 up.

After a brief rest and re-refocus on what needed to be done in the 2nd half the team took the pitch once more hungry to even the score and perhaps go one better. In the 2nd half it was definitely the Vipers that had the better possession, creating lots of opportunities through the application of continuous pressure on the St Frances defense and goalkeeper. Eventually an equalizer came about to make it 2-2.

Despite some last minute shots on goal, the Vipers could not find the back of the net to take the win but were more than happy with a draw for their efforts.

Due to the interchange rule, all students were able to play a part in the game and all contributed to the result coming on and off the pitch as needed. It was wonderful to see some positive leadership from some of the older, more experienced players. Whilst newer players to the club grew in confidence as the match went on.

A special mention to Margot, who played the entire game in the center of defense and was instrumental in thwarting some of St Frances’ best attacking opportunities.

This match was another positive step for KIS in building stronger ties within the community and we hope to be able to offer more such opportunities for competitive and friendly games against other schools in Term 3.

A big thank you to the many parents and other students who came down to Likas to support the team. It was wonderful to have you all present and cheering from the sidelines!

The team was comprised of the following students: Renee, Ji Min, Leilana, Celeste, Jolin, Roshween, Noah, Ludivine, Freya, Tania, Margot, Leya, Adriana, Kaiyisah, Destinee, Alexis and Trinity.

2nd SASA Novice Swimming Championship 2019, Penampang Sports Complex

On Saturday 23rd of March it was time for the 2nd SASA (Sabah Aquatic Sports Association) Novice Swimming Championship in Penampang Sports Complex. The aim of this competition is to provide an additional avenue and platform for the development of junior swimming talent to mature into State, National and/or International success. The individual event medalists of MSSD, MSSS, MSSM, SAG and NAG of 2018 are not eligible to participate in the competition.

The novice competition is open only for SASA affiliated teams, and therefore KIS Stingrays could not participate in the meet, but some of our KIS students swam in the competition with their local swimming clubs, Sea Dragon Swimming Club and Penampang Preps Swimming Club.

Once again, we could see how hard work and dedication brings results in the form of medals, ribbons and personal best times improved! Just to mention a few glimpses of the day; Seoyun took her first individual medal in the 50m freestyle race in 3rd place, Emmanuel got one gold, two silver and one bronze medal across all his individual races, Hope improved her personal best time in the 50m freestyle event by a massive 16 seconds, Leo achieved three gold, one silver and two bronze medals and Imogen three gold and three bronze medals in their individual events. In addition to these achievements, our swimmers were also successful in their respective club relay teams.

Congratulations and well done to all the KIS swimmers; Seoyun, Caleb, Emmanuel, Leo, Keira, Sophie, Hope and Imogen.

Primary Sports Day

Immediately following the Easter holidays, on Tuesday 23rd April, the whole of the Primary school from our littlest runners in Reception and Foundation 1 to our biggest athletes in Year 6 will head to Penampang stadium for the Primary Sports Day. Will Sapi maintain their title of Athletic champions or will Gaya or Sulug come through for the win? All students have been working exceptionally hard in their PE lessons over the past few weeks to train and prepare for the event so we are looking forward to seeing all our athletes in action.

A letter with all the details for the event will be sent home to parents next week.

Sport Education Award Ceremony

Next Tuesday 2nd April, all students in Years 7-10 will be celebrating the notable successes and outstanding achievements of both individuals and whole teams that we have seen throughout the unit in PE lessons.

A letter explaining the event has gone home to all parents of Year 7-10 students but a couple of reminders include that all students have been asked to bring a small plate of food to share after the ceremony. Items should be brought in in a reusable container and clearly labeled with your child’s name to be take home at the end of the event. Food items should be simple finger food item that does not require serving or eating utensils. The PE Department will supply plates and cups for food and drink.

Students have been asked to ‘dress up’ for the occasion and there will be a special ‘Best Dressed Team’ Award on the day.

It is sure to be a great event and I know the students are very much looking forward to it.
