From the Head of PE and Sport 04.11.2023

Our U15’s FOBISIA Vipers were welcomed back to school with thunderous applause in the hall on Monday as the secondary school created a ‘guard of honour’ for them to walk through and they were treated to a slide show of some of their highlights as well as testimonies from Mrs Renshaw and Mr Gipson congratulating them on their amazing achievements. Certainly, one more magical moment to remember for this team to go alongside everything else from the week before. On behalf of the team, thank you to all the KIS community for your kind words and congratulations passed on to the students, it is greatly appreciated!

U15 FOBISIA Games Part 2 – Building a basketball legacy

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, and others make it happen.” – Michael Jordan

If you took a poll of the athletes as to which of the four sports they were most looking forward to at FOBISIA, 99% probably would have said – Basketball! With all the training and subsequent progress the teams had made under the guidance of Coach Andrew the teams certainly had good reason to go into the day feeling confident of some good results. But I don’t think anyone would have quite predicted the extent to which the KIS Vipers would dominate both the boys and girls competitions.

The boys began their competition against Seoul Foreign School (SFS), who did challenge the boys at times with some fast attacking play but still came away with a convincing and confidence building 22-13 win. Likewise, the girls started in a killer fashion, dominating SFS all over the court. FOBISIA has a ‘mercy rule’ system whereby if the score ever reaches a difference of 20 points then scoring stops but the game continues. This rule came into play for the girls with scoring stopped at 26-6 and the girls getting their competition away to a winning start.

Round 2 and both teams were playing our Malaysian friends from BXCL in Penang. This time the boys enforced the mercy rule with a 26-6 win while the girls getting their second win, whilst the score board stopped at 27-7, more points were added after this in another strong performance from the girls.

Having already qualified for the final, the final match of the round robin matches against Garden Bangkok (GIS) was an opportunity for some of the younger and less experienced players in the boys team to have more time on the court. It was great to see the depth that the team had with all players contributing to yet another win that set the team up for the gold medal match, and a replay against GIS. Not to be outdone by the boys, the girls completed a perfect record of wins for the Vipers in their final game, defeating GIS 18-7 and ensuring they moved into the final full of confidence.

The boys took to the court for the final determined to showcase their talent and take out the win. Every player performed well and ensured that they did their job for the team, but Leroy and Ian Zi really stole the spotlight with some fantastic attacking play and flair on the ball. In a dominating performance, the boys managed to stop the scoring with a 31-11 win over GIS!

Next, the girls took to the court against BXCL, and just like the boys, wanted to assert their dominance in the final and show themselves as the best team in the competition. It was again another clinical performance from the team in both defense and offense with BXCL restricted to just 4 points in the game! To win the final with more than a 20 point margin really demonstrated the quality of the team and how far they have come in the past 12 months.

Throughout the day, coaches had been nominating a best player from the opposing team from each game. These votes were then used to select an “All Stars” team from across the four schools to take on the most ‘elite’ basketball team to assemble at Pattana Sports Resort – the Coaches! In recognition of their consistently skillful and dominating performances throughout the day, Leroy and Dasha were selected for the All Stars. This was a fun and entertaining addition to the FOBISIA games with the match played in good spirits and the coaches perhaps using their ‘physical’ strengths to their advantage ultimately running away with the game. Not that it was ever in question, but Coach Andrew put on a masterclass performance to highlight where the Vipers got their skills!

In recognition for his incredible performance throughout the day, Leroy was awarded the honour of being named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. A very deserved award for which he should be immensely proud of!

Following the All Stars game was the presentation where both teams were able to proudly claim their medals, while Tony and Pui San collected the Champion trophies to the applause of all other competitors and coaches. There was no doubt that both teams deserved this moment of success and recognition for all the hard work that had gone into preparing for the day. As the team captains so perfectly said in their post match interview, the wins in basketball were a result of a complete team effort and thanks to the many hours of dedication and commitment to training that went in prior to the competition.

A special thanks to Coach Andrew who did a superb job of coaching the teams during the day and bringing out the best in every single player!

Stay tuned next week for the final FOBISIA chapter in this fairy tale!

Liga SupaRimau Season C Weekend Wrap-up

Season C, despite the many interruptions due to public holidays, seems to have flown by with all teams enjoying some fantastic football. Today’s matches are the second last round before the final round on Saturday 18th November.

Under 8’s Match Report

“After the U8s Vipers team played out a courageous match against SAFA’s second best team a couple of weeks ago. they regrouped to play out another gut wrenching good game against ATKB on the 28th October under testing circumstances. The U8s players on this day must be commended for being able to play with their hearts out despite the challenges faced and continuing to show fantastic progress.  Each one of them deserves a pat on the back for their efforts!” – Coach Jimmy

Under 10’s Match Report

“The Under 10 team obtained another pleasing result last weekend against KKFC with a 2-2 draw. After going down 1 nil, the Vipers equalised with a brilliant solo effort from Thomas after the opponents failed to realise the ball had been kept in play. KIS then went a goal down again after a direct shot on goal from the opponents goal kick. Not to be defeated, the Vipers stayed in the match and continued to fight. They were rewarded for their tenacity with another equalising goal via Arlo and a little help from the KKFC defender. Another positive result for the team worth celebrating!” – Coach Roberto

Under 12’s Match Report

“KIS Vipers Under 12’s continued to show their massive development as a squad in Liga SupaRimau with a 4-1 loss to the much fancied TABS B side. The result doesn’t tell the full story of the game as the Vipers dominated field position and ball possession for large parts of the match but were unable to create many chances against a much larger and more physical defense. They did manage to break through for one goal from player of the match Andrew but there were many solid performances across the pitch from the group.” – Coach Bromley

Congratulations to the following players for being rewarded the Player of the Match last week.

Under 8’s – Eden

Under 10’s – Arlo

Under 12’s – Andrew
